PrintMusic/NotePad Sunset FAQ

Despite having worked closely with our Apple partners, we will not be able to support Finale PrintMusic or NotePad on High Sierra, nor in subsequent operating systems. For that reason, we will discontinue selling these products and they have been removed from the Finale store.

Q: Will PrintMusic and NotePad ever be updated to work with future Mac operating systems?

A:  We will continue to support PrintMusic and NotePad for Windows for the foreseeable future and they remain available on our website. However, we do not plan to update these products, which are based on previous Finale versions. Instead our focus will remain on improving our flagship notation product, Finale.

Q: What if I am using Windows?

A: PrintMusic is still available for Windows and is compatible with Windows Vista-Windows 10. NotePad is compatible with Windows XP-Windows 10.

Q: Can I use PrintMusic on a Windows machine or a Mac with an older operating system, even though it is currently installed on a newer Mac?

A: Yes. If you have already purchased PrintMusic, you can download the installer from your MakeMusic account. You will need to deauthorize your Mac seat of PrintMusic because you are limited to 1 seat for PrintMusic.

Q: How can I get PrintMusic as a new customer?

A:  PrintMusic is available only for the Windows operating system. You can find the free trial for Finale PrintMusic for Windows here and find purchase options on the MakeMusic Store.

Q: Apple updated my operating system automatically or I have purchased a new Mac with macOS 10.13 or 10.14, what are my options?

A: You can contact Apple and let them know that you have a version of a software that is not compatible with your current operating system and see what they suggest. Another option is to trade-up to Finale, our professional-level notation software, that is compatible with the current Mac operating system. Download the 30-day free trial of Finale to see if this is the right fit for you.

Q: What is the price of an upgrade from PrintMusic to Finale?

A: The trade-up price for Finale is $200.

Q: I bought PrintMusic within the last year, can I get Finale for free?

A: While a trade-up to Finale is not available for free, you do have options. As an owner of one of our entry level products, you have the ability to trade-up to Finale, our professional music notation software, at a reduced price anytime.

Q: What is a free MakeMusic notation product for Mac?

A: MakeMusic does not currently offer free notation software for macOS 10.13 or 10.14. A trial version of Finale is available online and allows you to save and print for 30 days.

Q: Is PrintMusic or NotePad available for iPad?

A: Finale products for iOS are not currently on our product roadmap. This allows us to provide iterative releases to our customers and focus on improving Finale.

Q: Can I open PrintMusic and NotePad files in Finale?

A: Yes. Both Finale legacy files (.mus) and Finale notation files (.musx) can be opened in the latest version of Finale.

Q: What if I have Finale 2014.5?

A: Finale 2014.5 is compatible with Mac OS X 10.8 - macOS 10.12. For more information about compatibility with macOS 10.12, visit the Finale Knowledge Base. If you would like to try the latest version of Finale (compatible with Mac OS X 10.10 - macOS 10.14), you can start with the free 30-day trial today.

Q: What if I don’t need everything Finale offers?

A: Finale is designed as a professional publishing tool. While it may go beyond the needs of your current workflow, it should fit the bill. If you are coming from one of our entry level products, you will find that many of the basic functions are familiar. If you’re brand new, our Learning Center can help you get up and running.

Q: What is the return policy if Finale isn’t for me?

A: Finale can be refunded up to 30 days after purchase. Please contact the Customer Success Team for more information. Be sure to try the 30-day free trial of Finale before buying.

Q: Why can’t I call in about this?

A: Finale technical support is available exclusively online. You can contact our agents through our online support portal. Our Customer Success Team has a guaranteed turnaround time of one business day but often, customers receive responses sooner than the guarantee.
