My finale program now crashes every time I try to use the vertical collision remover plugin. A message reading "unknown lyric tag detected" pops up and then it crashes. I've tried updating both the program and my computer, restarting, copying a pasting it into a new file and still it crashes. What is an "unknown lyric tag" and what can I do to fix this? I use the program almost every day and I'm dead in the water without it.

You will need to supply us with lots more info. What Finale version and what computer OS. What is the exact circumstance this is happening?

Finale 27.3, Mac OS: Monterey. Everything worked fine until Finale’s latest update last week. I have noticed when I generate a song without lyrics the vertical collision plugin works fine. However, as soon as I type in lyrics and use the collision plugin a message saying “unknown lyrics tag detected” and crashes. I’ve made a formal inquiry with Finale and I’m waiting on their response. I’ve googled the problem as well and can’t find any info on “an unknown lyric tag”.

Are you saying it works when there are no lyrics but it doesn't work if there is?

I am sorry I can't help much since I don't use many, any, of the plugins in Finale besides JW Change and JW Polyphony and Perfect Layout. PL fixes all my ,many, collisions, perfectly.

I've run into the same thing. When there are no lyrics, the vertical collision remover works fine. It's one of my favorite tools. Sometimes, it has worked when there are lyrics, but when it does crash, it's always the "unknown lyric tag" error message. I have no idea what that is. I'm going to submit a help ticket, but I thought I would check here first. I'm running Finale v27 on Windows 11. Any ideas would be appreciated.

In both cases, since the issue occurred after an OS update, the first thing to try is to reinstall Finale and see if the issue goes away. If not, send it to Support through the Submit a request link.

If Support gave you a different solution that fixed you up, please report back so that others with this issue might find it in a search.

Support said that it is a known issue and they are working on a fix. but with no timeline yet. I was told I could revert back to an earlier version of Finale, but since I don't encounter this a lot, it's a minor inconvenience, so I'll wait for a fix. I was told I would be notified via email when a fix is available. I am curious to know, fix or no fix, what "an unknown lyric tag" actually is. Any ideas?

No idea but if you could post a screen shot, I can tell you if it’s a Finale or OS error.

I believe that it is a Finale error message.  I've already rolled back so I can't reproduce it.  I can't believe that Microsoft would have a lyric error msg.

Must be a Finale issue since we have folks seeing it on both Windows and Mac.

It is indeed a finale issue. Turns out there’s a glitch in the latest update which if using the vertical collision remover plugin with music that has lyrics it crashes the whole program. Finale had me redownload the previous version and so I’m working off of that now. I’ve had no issue since reinstalling a previous version. Hopefully, the next update will resolve this altogether.

Must be…

Doesn’t mean a thing. OS and application errors aren’t really errors—they’re reports. Knowing if the OS or Finale generated the report is important — and neither of you know. A screen shot would tell me which it is and might give a clue where to look.

We all know that Finale is the cause but that wasn’t the question. This is:

Screenshots are below. I'm running Finale 27 on Windows 11. After I click OK on the second error message, Finale shuts down, reboots, and recovers the document. This only happens when lyrics are present.

Does anyone know if this has been fixed yet so I can update?

Thank you!

To my knowledge, MakeMusic has not found a fix. I just avoid using the vertical collision remover on anything with lyrics. For my purposes, this works. I would love to know if anyone has found a solution or workaround.

It has not been fixed yet. The only solution is going back to a previous version of Finale. I haven’t updated since.

Anyone know if this has been fixed in 27.4.1?

It has not. I’ve been working with older version for over a year now. I love finale but at this point doesn’t look I’ll be able to upgrade ever again. It’s kinda bizarre and very frustrating this has not been fixed yet.

My computer did that three times in a row yesterday. I don't have any lyrics and I don't remember it ever doing that before although it has occasionally, very occasionally, shut down but did it only once. Not three times ina row!

Is it possible that someone posts a Finale document where the problem occurs?
The Perfect Layout plug-in has a number of fixes for invalid lyrics entries. I could try if this solves the issue.

It’s a glitch in the most recent update. The program didn’t crash when using the vertical collision remover plug-in before the last update. I’m now running the previous version of finale and it all works again. I’m not certain I feel comfortable updating anything now or in the future if this is something that could happen. It’s a glitch in the recent update.
