I am dealing with a large score, adding a lot of fermatas to whole measure rests.  After I add the fermata, it appears above the rest for a moment, but after I scroll it flips to under the rest (it will also print this way).  If I click on the handle, the fermata will appear above, but will then revert to under the note.  It also happens sometimes on notes.

I was able to work around by redefining the fermata to be always above the note, to not avoid the staff, and by adjusting the vertical offset from the handle.  But it is still annoying (as this is the 2nd time it has happened) and I think now I couldn't put the fermata under a note if I wanted to...

This is not normal behavior. Perhaps you should use the "Submit a request" link at the top of this page to contact MM directly so you can send them a file that shows this happening.

I've noticed this behavior on and off for many years. It hasn't happened to me in recent memory, but I do seem to recall it being a real pain a few versions ago. I think it happened mostly with the Jazz font. I don't think I've encountered it since I started using Broadway Copyist.

This is the famous Dancing Articulations bug. It is at least ten years old. It affects articulations that have automatic placements that are outside the staff and seems to be affected by staff reduction (which is, of course, pretty much every part you edit). It also seems to be affected by more than one layer in a staff, but I haven't tracked it down that closely. It seems to affect the view, but not the actual placement. It's still annoying because you don't see what your final placement is without a redraw.

I can hit command-D (on my Mac) to redraw the screen and the thing will show up where it is supposed to be. However, if I try to drag it, it immediately jumps to some other position, and I don't know where to drag it to. MM should fix this annoying, and VERY old, bug.

Hi All,

I was testing this with a similar setup as the original poster, Lyndon, but was unable to replicate as described. For those of you who are seeing this, is there a particular font that you see this with currently? Also, perhaps there are other specific circumstances like number of systems, left/right pages, etc. that may help us replicate the issue?

I do recall experiencing in the past, but I am not seeing it right now with whole rest measures, and would like to nail the issue down.

The font set is Engraver.  It is a fairly large score (around 40 staves).  It happens in both scroll view and page view.  Thanks for the help!

Try a caesura on the default Maestro file. Those slippery bastards are nuts! Drag it up or down and then click away from it and try to drag it again. Jump! Then hit cmd-D (on my Mac) to redraw the screen and watch it jump again.

The fermata appears to be set to be Always Above in my default file (Did I change that? I don't remember, but I prefer it this way.) When it was set to Auto according to stem/layer direction, it would jump around in the same way pretty badly, too.

I am definitely seeing some odd drawing behavior with articulations. I will go ahead and write this up for development's consideration. This may fall more into the larger scope of improving Finale's drawing capabilities, but I would at least like to have this recorded for the sake of reference during that effort.

Lyndon: I'm afraid I am not quite seeing the drastic behavior (this is splitting hairs a bit) of the articulations flipping, but I know that I have seen the fermata marking initially assign on the wrong side of the note. In those cases I have done what many have suggested (I believe yourself included) and that is to switch to the Above Note positioning option.

Best!
