Mac. Finale 2012c.r13 Running 10.8.5 on a MacBook Pro Mid 2010 2.4ghz 16GB Ram SSD HardDrive. Finale User since 1994.

For some time now, I have been having this problem. While running Finale 2012 I have a recurring error menu coming up over and over and over again. "UNable to open file. It has been saved by a later version of Finale. If I click on the window (OK) it does not close the window.

Eventually the window closes, however, it appears and disappears under it's own power. Further, if I close Finale - I will repeat - FINALE IS CLOSED...and I touch a finale file and move it ( for instance if one is on my desktop ) the window opens again. Again, FINALE IS NOT RUNNING, but, the window pops up anyway.

NOTE: Just to be thorough, when Finale is running -  there is no Finale file that I am trying to open which has been made by a later version of Finale.  I'm simply utilizing files that I am generating myself. This happens on files that I have just created - utilizing Finale 2012 itself...

That's my problem. This has been happening for a long time but, I have said nothing about it because I haven't been doing a great deal of composing for the last two years. However, I'm back at it and I need this to stop.

Thanks as always for your help.

Hello Thomas,

It looks like Finale has developed some core level corruption. Have you had a chance to try and reinstall Finale? Here are the recommended steps to make sure it is a clean reinstall:

1. Open your Mac's Applications folder.
2. In the Applications folder, find your "Finale [your version number]" icon and drag it to the Trash. Locate any "Finale [your version number]" icons on your Desktop or Dock and move them to the Trash as well.
3. In the Finder program toolbar, choose Go > Go to Folder. Type or copy & paste the following location: "~/library/preferences" (without quotes).
4. In your user Preferences folder, find a file named "Finale [your version number] Preferences". Drag it into the trash.
5. Also in this folder, you may find a file named "Finale [your version number] Keymaps" (this may or may not exist depending on your system). Drag it to the trash.
6. In the Finder program toolbar, choose Go > Go to Folder. Type or copy & paste the following location: "~/library/application support/makemusic" (without quotes). Drag the "Finale [your version number]" folder to the trash.
7. In the Finder program toolbar, choose Go > Go to Folder. Type or copy & paste the following location: "/library/application support/makemusic" (without quotes). Drag the "Finale [your version number]" folder to the trash.
8. In the Finder program toolbar, choose Go > Go to Folder. Type or copy & paste the following location: "/library/preferences" (without quotes).
9. In your system Preferences folder, find and delete these two files (these may or may not exist depending on your system):

"Finale [your version number] UpdateCheck.txt"
"Finale [your version number] InstallerVersion.txt"

10. In the Finder program toolbar, choose Go > Go to Folder. Type or copy & paste the following location: "/library/receipts" (without quotes).
11. In your Receipts folder, find and delete the following files (these may or may not exist depending on your system):

Any files named "Fin2k........pkg"
Any files named "MakeMusic....Font.pkg"

12. Empty your Trash.
13. Restart your computer.
14. Re-install Finale by downloading it from your MakeMusic account.
15. Relaunch Finale and see if the issue has been resolved.
