While playing back a big band chart set at 120 the tempo suddenly increases and steadily continues to increase at measure 17 and on to the end.

Where did you get the file? Did you enter it yourself from scratch?
If your file contains MIDI tempo instructions, either visible or hidden, they will override any tempo you have indicated in the scratch tempo box at the top of the screen.
Try clearing all MIDI data by highlighting (selecting) ALL and using the Edit > Clear Selected Data option to clear all MIDI data.
