Help -I need you experts on handling transposing instrument.

I'm to play trumpet in a amatoer symphoni orchester in the upcomming week-end, and I have  run into the same problem as last year -where it was'nt solved either.

Here is the scope!
I play on a Bb trumpet and my score are written for an A trumpet.
So I have entret the full trumpets score from the common score in A -as an trumpet in C -transposed  to ((A ) Up m3, Add 3 flats) using the instrument view to fill in the notes.
Using a Picc. trumpet in A yields the same result.

When I the change the transposing instrument fra A to Bb, the score does not seems to be right. It's transposed far to low in the register.

What am I doing wrong, why cant I get it to work properly. Do I need to extra transpose each voice up an octave or what is wrong.

The resulting score attached i Finale format and the originals score could both be attached, if there where a place to do it!

From your description it is not clear what you have done.

What tool did you use for the transposition? - The Key Signature Tool? - The Staff Tool?

I understand that your issue is a layout issue, not a playback issue.

However, to troubleshoot I have a question about the playback:

When you click the Playback button, does your Finale document play back in the correct key (= the Concert Pitch key)?

Or is the playback key wrong?

I've using the tools incorporated with the selection of instruments.

 E.G

First selecting the right instrument (Trumpet in C) and making this a transposing instrument as (A) Up M3, Add 3 flats. That is the score manager!

Then setting the right key in the score in instrumental mode,(in this case C-major for this instrument) which is the staff tool.

When finishing the score i'll save both the score for A-instrument and a copy of that as an Bb instrument.

Going on with the Bb instrument, I'll just change the instrument to a trumpet Bb in the score manager.

This does changing the key correct but places all notes wrong -far to low.

Sigh!!!! how do I transport a file to you??

Leo Vedel Dyrkjær,

Using the Staff Tool could be your mistake.

I would use the Key Signature Tool, to set the document in the right Concert Pitch key signature.

For an instrument in A, with the key of C-major as its written key signature, the right Concert Pitch key signature is A-major (= 3 sharps).

To attach a Finale document here in the forum, you’ll need to upload the document so that someone can look at it.

You’ll need to upload the document to a file sharing service, and then post a link to that document here.

My choral score is for 2 trumpets in Bb, horn in F, trombone, tuba, SATB, piano/organ. I orchestrated correctly; concert key is EbM, therefore Bb trumpets are in FM and the horn in F is in BbM. On playback everything is sounding in the key signature of each instrument, in other words, for example, the Bb trumpets are sounding in FM whereas they should be sounding in EbM. Same situation with the horn in F. Any Ideas?

Thanks, Richard

From your description it sounds like you used the Staff Attributes to give the transposing staves Independent Key Signature.

As you have found out, that solution will not make any instruments transposing instruments; they will all play back as C instruments.

Instead, de-select the option Independent Key Signature.

When you have done so, all staves will display the key of Eb Major (3 flats).

Some of the instruments may display and play back in the wrong octave (an octave too high, or too low).

You can fix that with the Selection Tool. Hitting the number 8 key will transpose the selected down by an octave.

The number 9 key will transpose up by an octave.

To make an instrument transposing, use ScoreManager > Instrument List.

In the lower right corner of the Instrument List there is a pop up menu for transpositions.
