Here's a voice from the past, Tom Carruth. Just wanted to report that I've been having a problem for the past 3 version or so. When I edit the multi-measure symbol in parts to shorten it (useful if the next measure has a clef change) it looks fine until I move from that part to another, then return. Then it reverts back to the old setting. I told Larry M about this 3 years ago but I don't know if that info ever got back to Mark J.
Tom Carrith,

Actually it is quite the opposite:
You should turn “Update Automatically” ON during the initial phase where you enter the music from Scroll View.
Then “Update Automatically” will break multimeasure rests (and adjust measure widths) as you enter music into empty measures.
You should turn “Update Automatically” OFF in the final phase where you have finished entering music, and are working on the layout.
In that way you can avoid that Finale destroys your layout work on multimeasure rests and measure widths.
Thanks for this post. I was having a similar problem: I adjusted certain multimeasure rests so that the number was below, rather than above, the rest. Upon printing, this adjustment was undone and the print ruined. I used your post's information to turn off the Update Automatically button and the printing was fine. Thanks again!
