I click on the green arrow in the playback controls and it crashes the program.    

Also, I used to hear the pitch sound as I input each note.   Now I hear nothing.   

This is version 2012 on a Mac El Capitan.

Yes, thank you Mike.   I began to read about the incompatibilities with the this OS.   I downloaded the free 30 day new version 25 and it works fine.
