I set out a message a few days ago about Viola Clef in relationship to concert / transposed scores.
My goals:
- Write for 5 staff string ensemble
- Use "Display in Concert Pitch"
- Using Treble Clef for Viola
- Use written octave for Double Bass
- Be able to edit "In Concert Pitch"
- Be able to print as transposed parts, without having to change clefs or adjust octaves
My obstacle: Finale has provided four options, but none of them accomplished this exact list of goals. However, David C at MakeMusic did help me understand the Viola question. That in turn led me on to a trick that made for a very elegant "work around."
I set up my score this way:
- Violin and Cello staves as per normal, no problem
- Viola staff — using the score manager create the following clef and transposition settings
- Viola First Staff — Set to Treble
- Transposition — Set to OTHER, and choose "no transposition", check the "clef" box and choose VIOLA clef
- The trick is to do a similar "slight of hand" for the Double Bass (Arco Bass, Bass Guitar) staff as well
- DoubleBass First Staff — Set to Bass8vb (That is the F clef with a small 8 below it)
- Transposition — Select Transposition "UP OCTAVE", then check the clef box and choose the standard Bass (F) Clef
Now, when you are working with a transposed score (i.e. WITHOUT "Display in Concert Pitch" and "Keep Octave Transposition") you will see
- transposing instruments in their written keys
- Viola in viola clef
- Double Bass, Bass Guitar in their written octave (but still transposed 8vb for MP3 exports)
Alternatively, when you select "Display in Concert Pitch" you will see:
- Transposed instrument in their sounding pitch (concert pitch)
- Viola in treble clef
- Double Bass is still in the correct written octave, even though you enter pitches 8vb in the actual sounding pitch
If you are reading this thread, I hope this is clear and helpful. If not, please ask questions here.
