As mentioned in this thread, I can add the backwards tie to the note in speedy entry, but when I exit speedy entry it disappears.
Any solutions?

Thanks in advance!

This may just be an issue with redrawing the screen. If you haven't done this before, just hit CTRL+D (for Windows) and it should be ok.

Once, I had to redraw the screen when I loaded my custom library file for it to register visually (usually I don't have to). If something doesn't appear on the screen as it should, you should always try redrawing the screen or updating the layout (CTRL+U)

Thanks for the reply!

Nope, redrawing the screen doesn't help. When I view the bar in speedy entry, the backwards ties appear, but when I exit it they aren't visible.

What about playback?

Does the document play back the tied note(s) correctly?

No it doesn't, though playback isn't a concern of mine.

Simon Dawkins,

You wrote that the document does not play back the tied notes correctly.

In what way is the playback incorrect?

- Do the two tied notes not play back with the same pitch?

- Do the tied notes play back as two tones (rather than one long tone)?

The playback follows exactly what is written, which is the two notes not tied together.

For me, at least, the "this thread" link in the original post causes a not-available error; so I cannot see what you are tieing backward to.

It was someone with the same problem. I just wanted to show that I had searched the forum before posting :)

Simon Dawkins,

You wrote that the command for tie to the previous note does not work.

What happens if you instead go back to the previous note, and add a tie to the following note?

Does that work?

By The Way:

Have you tried adding the tie with the Simple Entry Tool instead?

There is no previous note to tie to; the note it's tied to is at the end of the repeated section.

Yes, I've tried entering it in both Simple Entry and Speedy Entry.

Simon,

You wrote.

“There is no previous note to tie to; the note it's tied to, is at the end of the repeated section.”

To get a tie in this - special - case try the Speedy Entry Tool’s (very technical) dialog box Edit Frame where you can select the option “Tie End”.

It works, but only under limited circumstances:

1. The preceding measure must have a Back Ending Repeat Bar. You can hide this Back Ending Repeat Bar with a staff style.

2. Tie ends can't be added to the first measure of the document.

It seems to me this is a pretty basic function.
I have contents inside a simple repeat. The last note in the repeat is tied to the first note.
So tying the note before the repeat wouldn't help me (if there were a note there), because that's not what I'm trying to write.

The attached example was created with Finale, by using the method I indicated (with a hidden Back Ending).

However, what you are trying to do, is not standard practice.
The standard solution would be to write it out - or use 1st and 2nd repeat endings.

Forgive me, but I don't understand what you mean by using 1st and 2nd repeat endings. If I were to make the second bar of this example a 1st repeat ending, the same issue would still exist, in that the last note of the 1st ending would need to be tied to the first note in the repeated section.

The section in question repeats ten times, and is identical each time, so you can see why I don't want to write it out in full.

Perhaps 1st and 2nd repeat endings are not the solution in this particular case.

But you could write it out twice (the repeated section is just two measures), and repeat the second time 9 times:

The flags for both bass and lead entries are placed upwards instead of downwards.  Also, the note ties are placed upwards instead of downwards.

Gary Thiel,

Perhaps your post should have been in the other thread?

(the thread that says “Noe tie is upside down”)

Peter, not sure what you mean?

Gary Thiel,

You wrote in the other thread (= “Noe tie is upside down”):

“Windows 10. I arrange both satb and ttbb scores. When I tie notes in both the lead and bass entries, the tie is not in the correct position( bass , the tie is upward and in lead, again it is upward) .”

I suspect that your post in the thread here (= “Tie to previous note' in speedy entry doesn't work”) belongs to the thread “Noe tie is upside down”.

In Other Words that you may have posted in the wrong thread.
