Hi!

Mac OS X Sierra, Finale 25; Does anyone out there in composer land have a library or any tricks that can display the Salzedo Modern Study harp notations? Most specifically, notations for Aeolian rustling, falling hail, thunder effect, and metallic sounds. I have tried creating new shapes as articulations, expressions and smart shapes and just can't get close. Anybody work with these notations before?

You CAN do it manually but I've heard great success using Bill Duncan's "Salzedo Harp Font." You can find it at NPC Imaging if still available. http://www.npcimaging.com/books/BillDuncan.htm

From the site:
"User comment, as posted in the Coda Finale/Macintosh forum...

"Unsolicited testimonial: I've used Bill's fonts for about 6 months and they're all excellent. The Chord font addresses the problem you're trying to solve, but maybe better than that is the Chord suffix library that's part of the package. Over a hundred suffixes predefined, some very complex. I've had to create exactly one, and that was just a matter of duplicating/modifying an existing suffix. Other fonts are problem specific: harp notation, brackets, "rolls" (arpeggio squiggles), time signatures, metronome marks, shaded rehearsal boxes, unshaded boxes, lyrics. All wonderful. (The harp font, "Salzedo" is a tour-de-force. Bill reproduces a few pages of one of Salzedo's books, chock full of specialized notation and instructions, mostly with this font and text blocks. The instructions of how to master text blocks to the extent that one can use Finale for extensive musical textbooks is worth the price of the font alone. Must be seen to be believed!)..."

The Toccata font also contains a number of Salzedo harp symbols.

Toccata and Fughetta are a pair of shareware fonts.

The free version of the Toccata and Fughetta fonts available in the shareware download (tocfug.sit.hqx) is a very old version that was not developed with OS X in mind. Some of the character mapping in that version does not work well in later OS X versions.

Toccata and Fughetta have been completely rebuilt since that version and the current version for sale works with all version of OS X. It is still available for sale for Mac and Windows; the price is $30 for the pair of fonts. Full information can now be found at https://slipsong.com/aboutfonts.html

The free demo version available for evaluation is still the old version. If you have any questions, you can contact me at blake[at]slipsong.com.
