When Document Options>Music Spacing> Avoid Collision of: Ledger Lines is checked, which is the default setting,  the result is uneven spacing:

Since this setting produces such bad results in the most common situations, I think that it would be better if this option were not checked as the default setting.

Hi John and Knut.

Duly noted to improve Finale's music spacing as it relates to ledger lines as well as a host of other elements. Fin-4176.

I also recognize this as the simplest solution to some of Finale's spacing idiosyncrasies.

Unfortunately, John's preferred setting introduces problems if applied to notes with accidentals or without in sufficiently tight situations. It also seems to address a fundamental problem with Finale's automatic spacing, which I think is too simplistic, depending way too much on manual adjustment to deliver good results. Not only is this the case for simple situations like the above, but also when dealing with accidentals (as I've posted elsewhere), or in all situations calling for optical compensation. All these situations should be part of automatic music spacing for Finale to be on par with the competition in this respect.

I mentioned this in another thread, but I'll add it here for completeness. My "Note Spacing" plugin has an option for ledger line spacing that vastly improves the Finale spacing. It uses the following algorithm:

1. Change Doc Opts ledger line length to be shorter (or longer) depending on plugin setting.
2. Run Finale's note spacing.
3. Restore the original Doc Opts ledger line length.

You can try this manually yourself to see what I mean about how much better it works. My plugin just automates it.

Thanks for the tip, Robert. I tried the process you described, but the spacing issue, while improved, still remained. I hope I did it correctly. Only by deselecting the ledger line collision avoidance was I able to get even spacing.

I entered your example above into a "document without libraries". I then changed (Ledger Lines) Left Half Length and Right Half Length both to zero. I then ran note spacing (the 4-key). Then I reverted the ledger lines settings back to their defaults of 6 and 3 evpu respectively. I got the following:

This result (for me) is superior to turning off leger line collisions because there is still a slight gap between the leger lines.

If you truly want exact proportional spacing irrespective of leger lines, shouldn't you be using beat spacing?

(EDIT: I also beautified the beams because, well...Patterson beams.)

Thank you very much, Robert. That is much better than the result I got and is an excellent resource that I will make use of in the future. I was not reducing the ledger lines to 0 and 0 before applying note spacing, but to 4 and 4, which I use for tight situations. (I normally use the Finale default of 6 and 6 for ledger lines.) I definitely prefer exactly proportional spacing for this type of example, but in many cases I don't want to apply beat spacing to the whole measure, just the offending part.
