I use Reaper for arranging drums, etc. Sometimes I use VSTis that use GM map, sometimes a VSTi with different mapping. But either way, I always know what notes correspond to what pieces of the drum kit. In Reaper I can assign various pieces to 1 channel, other channel for other pieces, etc. So I could have HH, rides, snare on Channel 1. And kick and toms on channel 2.

Given that, what I need to do is open the MIDI file in Finale, and get a proper looking percussion staff with one layer for channel one, another layer for channel 2.

Ideas?

thanks,

Brian

Percussion Layouts (in combination with Percussion Maps) can assigned various MIDI numbers to specific noteheads and locations on the five-line staff. You would likely have to compress all your MIDI percussion info into one track of Reaper before exporting its MIDI track into Finale. How you would handle Kick Drum being in a separate layer (with stems down) I am not sure. I thought you might composite the different layers into separate Reaper tracks and import them into Finale separately before changing the layer of one track and copy/pasting just that layer onto one staff, but I'm not sure how that would work with percussion.

I've never tried that myself; I usually work from notation to DAW when I use both; but it's an interesting challenge. You might try a short proof-of-concept project to see.
