windows 7, demo-version of newest Finale

(Frustrated because had to commit by midnight to get the April Fool's sale, but looks like it's not going to happen....)

opened up a "default document", created a sample assortment of notes to try out the feature of "enhanced lyric spacing" which I have not been able to use, having been working with 2010.
tried alt-0173 & it didn't work, so wondered if there was a new method, yet the tutorial page gave that as the way to create a hyphen.

Some documents I open in 2010 have alt-0173 not work while typing into score, but then I add it in the editing dialogue box.  (I've meant to inquire about that, but never did...)

(It did not allow me the work-around with the demo to add the hyphen in the editing dialogue box, either)

I've read another post about hyphens not working & recommendations of changing "Preferences" in the computer - that it is not an issue with the software.  What/where does one do that- & what is to be "preferred"? :)

Hi Karen,

Thanks for posting!

Yes, that function does not seem to be working as expected, at least at first glance here using Finale Lyrics. Fortunately, there is another and, in my opinion, easier way to do this.

If you are using the Lyrics Window you can type a syllable, choose Text Insert Hard Hyphen (from within the Lyrics Windows) and then insert the next syllable. This hard hyphen will serve the same function as the hyphen that would've been entered with ALT-0173. On Windows, you can also use accelerator key combinations to make this easy. So, when you are ready to type in a hard hyphen just press ALT then X then successively. You don't have to hold any of those down, just one right after the other: ALT > X > H.

For what it's worth, if you aren't using the Lyrics Window, the same menu item and accelerator key combination applies, it's just in the text menu in the program toolbar when you have the Lyrics tool selected.

Hope this helps!

I'm sorry that I waited until the last minute to test out the new demo & missed the great sale.
I did as you instructed on the experimental file I created last night, & indeed, ALT-H-X functioned as ALT-0173, & happily uses less key-strokes.

I'll just have to file the knowledge away for whenever I actually do purchase an upgrade....

Thanks for taking the time to help me accomplish what I need Finale to do for me (in this particular application which I had found to not be straightforward as compared with what I am used to with my current version) !
