Hello all,

Curious to learn if anyone knows how to record "live" from Finale into Logic Pro X?  Basically all the MIDI files / sound libraries are set-up within finale.  Then when I hit playback within finale it would essentially "live" record directly into a DAW such as Logic Pro X.  Is this possible?  Then I can edit the sound files in Logic that have been recorded from Finale.

Finale version 25.4

Why not export as MusicXML and import directly into Logic?

Not all DAWs support .xml import but Logic does. This way, you set your VIs in a DAW where you have a lot more control.

Thanks for addressing my question.  I have not worked much with XML and loading VI's into Logic as of yet but I realize that in the long run the flexibility is greater within a DAW but with all the subtle articulations, cresc, etc within my finale score that are played back I would have to basically reload all of my sound libraries into Logic and set it up within Logic which is going to take some time.  I was hoping to just somehow have Finale play the file into Logic for a quick representation of my piece.  Unless the XML file will retain all of my articulations, etc...again, I ahve not worked with this type of file much...any thoughts on the subject are appreciated.

Your other choice is to export the MIDI as .wav files and load them into Logic. So, instead of manipulating VIs, you're manipulating audio tracks. You'll have to figure out which workflow is best for you.

Since the Finale DAW functionality is limited at best, I don't use it other than to hear a mockup in GIfF or GPO 5. Instead, I export the raw MIDI and assign my VIs in Digital Performer which does not support MusicXML import (yet? I hope). I tried using Logic as a translator with .xml and that did work but it was a few extra steps I didn't need. If I used Logic as my primary DAW, however, that's what I would do.

I imagine that Soundflower could be made to work here as long as it's 16 tracks or less. Audio Hijack should work, too, but I don't know the track limit.

I suppose I don't get the need other than you want to do this. Export the MIDI as .wav files. Opening Logic and dropping them in takes anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes depending on the length of the files and your Mac. An i5 Mac will take longer than an i7 or Mac Pro for this task.

Concentrate on the result than on how you want to do it.

If you want to import the Finale Playback as it is into Logic, save your Finale file as .wav and import it into Logic. Maybe you can even have Logic listen to Finale and record while Finale is playing.

On the Mac, there are some "routing" apps, such as Audio Hijack, Loopback, etc... which could help to make the applications communicate.

You can easily get sound files into Logic from Finale.

  1. Solo each staff one-by-one and
  2. use File>Export Audio for each.

You end up with .wav files all starting at 0:00, ready to be brought into Logic.

Could be a bit time consuming, depending on how many staves you have, but it could actually be faster than playing back the piece.

Caveats- if you have reverb active in Finale it will be in the export.

Steve,

Thanks for your thoughts...I have also tried this as well (exporting each part individually as an audio file) and thought it would work but I get a random note or two that fails within the MIDI recording and basically holds that note throughout the rest of the recording.  When this happens while working in the file I need to select "all notes off" in the MIDI menu...any thoughts on why this happens? Too many VI's loaded?

I doubt it's due to due overloading. The basic reason a note will continue to play is that the VI didn't receive a note-off message. Unfortunately that's something that's impossible to troubleshoot in a help forum.

If you were working in a DAW, I would suggest checking that note lengths are correct, overlapping notes could possibly cause this. There are too many variables to consider to give a real answer though. If it's random, maybe you could do multiple takes, and put them together in Logic. But this is potentially a horribly painful approach.

What do you want to do in Logic? If you want to and reverb or do some EQing, for example, this is possible in Finale using effects plugins.

As Mike said in his first post, your best bet will  be to import an XML file, or even just a midi file from Finale into Logic. I use Finale and Logic. You'll have much more control editing the midi data in Logic, than you would editing audio files. Yes, it'll take time to load you VI's. But realistically, depending on your instrumentation, what are we talking about, 10 minutes? Editing audio files, you're limited to mixing levels, panning, EQ, compression and other effects. But if you can edit the midi data, you've got control over velocities, legato, modulation, expression, etc.... you can make the music come alive.

Seeing Finale's midi data in a DAW, you'll soon see that it's a good starting point, but using Logic's tools, it can be greatly improved on.

When it comes to MIDI and VIs in Logic, there are user groups and many Apple Support sites where users discuss these issues. Other DAWs have their sites and user groups as well.

Although I have a current license for Logic X Pro, I use it as a translator only to open Logic and GarageBand files — that I export to DP, the app I know well.

A little late in the game but I was able to record Finale live into Garageband as well as Reaper by setting the Audio output in Finale to Soundflower and changing the audio input in Garageband to Soundflower.  You have to download Soundflower and Audio Hijack to do this.  An other option may be to get a USB microphone/line interface and physically run a 1/8" cable from your headphone jack into the USB interface.  I did this with ProTools' MBox way back in the mid-2000s and it worked.
