Finale latest version 25.4.1.152 Lenovo laptop running Windows 10

I have seen this bug in previous versions as well but forgot to ask...

When I create a new score using a template, when entering the initial tempo mark in the 'wizard', it only appears on the first part in the linked parts. So I have to go to the first bar, move it out of the way, re-enter it using the Expression Tool, then delete the original one in order to get it on all the parts.

[Feature request?] Also, I would like to be able to leave out a metronome marking. For the last few years, I just let it enter the default of 120, then go in and have to edit the expression definition to delete that part of the string. Just an annoyance.

Thanks

Have you thought of adjusting the template you use to suit your needs and then to save it as a custom template (under a different name, if you wish)?

Thanks. I am using a custom template that I designed.

The tempo mark inserted by the template 'wizard' (which I use to enter the title, initial key signature, initial time signature, and number of bars)  properly creates an expression in the 'tempo mark' category. I have 'top staff' selected in the assignment list in both the score and parts columns. Using the wizard, as I said, the marking only appears on the score and the very first linked part. When I re-create the tempo mark, in the score,  after the wizard is done, only then does it appear on every part.

I hope I am making myself clear. It is some kind of little glitch.

Tom,

When I use a custom template, I do not go through the Setup Wizard (although Finale seems to be sending you through that route in its latest iteration). I call up my custom template (saved as an .ftmx file in %appdata%\MakeMusic\Finale\Music Files\Templates in Windows 7) and then cancel any Setup update screens. I add any additional instruments I need using the Score Manager (which gives me a more granular selection of sounds anyway).

I can have a tempo mark already assigned in the template, ready to change if I need to; or I can leave that blank and assign it fresh from the Expressions > Tempo Marks  menu option. My tempo setting appear on all parts. Really skipping the setup routine for a template and assigning title, key, and time signature (if they differ from the template) using menu tools is not any more difficult for me than using the Setup screens.

Here we are 2+ years later and I continue to be annoyed by this problem and I disagree with you J Adrian Verkouteren.

I am currently engraving an entire Broadway score for a 14 piece band. I have created a score template with my desired

parameters (margins, sizes, measure numbers, some titling, staff names, part names etc etc). There are 44 cues so once is enough (at least this is my concept of a 'template' - avoid repeating work).

THEN:

Steps to begin a new cue are:

  • File=>New=> Document from Template...
  • A window pops up and I select "Gypsy Template" (which I have attached to this post)
  • A window pops up: Document Setup Wizard - Score Information
  • I fill In the Title (usually a cue number and some title text)
  • Choose "Next" ... then all in one window I can efficiently:
  • Select Time Signature
  • Select Key Signature
  • Specify Initial Tempo Marking
  • Specify Pickup Measure (if necessary)

Now I have 2 frustrating "Issues".

1. I can't make the Tempo blank (if I don't need a metronome marking), so I have to remember to go back later and "Edit Text Expression Definition" to remove the metronome marking

2. This "Initial Tempo Marking" only appears on the Score and the first orchestra Part. I have to:

  • Delete it from the score
  • Open the Expression tool
  • Find this expression under "Tempo Marks" (it's in the last box)
  • Assign it to the first measure

And only now does the necessary Tempo Mark appear at the top of every orchestra part..

In my humble opinion, this is a bug.

Try it with my template, if you like. Here is a link to it.

Thank you.

Tom,

I couldn't use your Gypsy template, it wouldn't open in FInale. But when I use the Wizard and choose a template from Finale's list, the tempo markings appear on every part, not just the first. In your template, do you have a staff list setup to assign the tempo marking to your desired staves?

There's also an option in the setup wizard, when you get to the initial tempo selection, there's a box that says "Specify Initial Tempo Marking". You can put a checkmark in the box if you want this tempo marking, or don't check it and the tempo marking will not be added. Is this what you're looking for?

Odd that you couldn't try my template file. There is nothing unusual about it .

Did you use this sharing link and download it?

I tried your suggestion - seemed like a good idea. I edited the "Tempo marks" category in the Expression Tool and

ticked "All parts" in Score List 1 (Category designer window). Then I saved this as my template. Unfortunately no good - it still only appears on the top staff and

the very first part (which is the top staff actually).

Yes, your comment "There's also an option in the setup wizard....."  That is exactly what I am doing and only getting the

marking on the first part.  I don;t want the Tempo marking to appear on every staff in the score - that's just clutter. But I need it

in the parts. It seems to me that it is designed to do this, but it's not working.

I changed the suffix of the template that I downloaded to "musx", then it worked. I had the same problem you mention, the MM marking was only on the first part and score. Yet any subsequent MM marking I added appeared on all parts.

If this was my project, I would create a regular Finale file and use that as my template. I would not import it into a document as a Finale template.

My comment in my previous post about "specify initial tempo marking", leaving that option unchecked was in response to this comment you made: "(if I don't need a metronome marking), so I have to remember to go back later and "Edit Text Expression Definition" to remove the metronome marking".

Thanks for this Jeffrey. Perhaps I am not using the template in the way it was intended. I understand what you mean about just using a file without any wizards.

Sorry about the confusion regarding the MM. There is the "word portion" i.e. MAESTOSO, ALLEGRO and such; and the "metronome marking" portion i.e. "(quarter note=120)" , "(half note=90)"

If you want it to just say "MAESTOSO" for example, and you're using the wizard, even if you leave the tempo value box blank, it always

adds the (quarter note = 120) portion as a default and you have to go back and remove it.

I just tested your other comment.

I told Finale "File=>New=>Document from Template".

I chose one of Finale's provided templates (Intermediate Band).

The Document setup wizard opens automatically.

In the "Specify Initial Tempo Marking" box I simply typed "FAST" with no tempo "value".

And behold, only on the first part, "FAST quarter=120" appears. I'm talking about the linked parts - only "Flute" has "FAST quarter=120"

I rest my case.

I notice that as soon as I enter a note in a part (say the Oboe), the initial tempo mark appears in all the parts.

You are a magician then:):)

I just repeated the steps described in my most recent post using Finale's Marching Band template.

Then I put a whole note in the first bar of Alto sax - no tempo mark.

Then I put 2 quarters in the first bar of oboe - no tempo mark.

Only method I find is: now delete the tempo mark from the score. Put it back in again with the expression tool.

And there it is on every part.

I tell you it is a bug - somewhat insignificant perhaps, except when I forget about it and send parts to people with no tempo.

Tom, you are correct that this is bug and we are aware of this. The issue happens specifically when using a template by going to File > New > Document from Template and adding the initial tempo expression during this process.

Thanks for clearing this up for me. It's been going on for years and it's not the first time I've inquired. I am a 20+ years Finale veteran

I would hope it's ok to take this opportunity to ask you about something else that has bothered me for many years.
Several versions of Finale ago (maybe even 10 years ago?) I was able to program the middle button on my mouse to be a "double-click". This was fabulous in Finale for a few tools, but especially for drawing slurs; i.e. highlight a note, push middle button and hold it down, draw slur, let go of button...done! I know it seems like a little thing, but it really speeds up a large project. Then suddenly Finale stopped recognizing this "single" double-click even though I can still program it using the mouse's interface. I questioned Finale experts in the Forum's, but all I got was " it's not an advertised feature so if it's gone, tough luck!" I grilled them a bit more as, before making music my full time career, I was a software engineer. I asked, did they change how the software interprets mouse clicks? No one could give me a straight answer. Can you?

Yup you're right. I haven't checked for a while but I just tested it with one of my recent templates.

Oh well.....

Thanks for the post.
