In a previous version of Finale, I had a staff style set up for Rhythm Notation (or slash) in one layer, and Notes in another. How can I set up a custom staff style with these options? Thanks!

Peter--

Worked like a charm. Exactly what I needed. Thanks again!

How do I get the notes to appear in "normal notation" in the other layer?

They are also in rhythmic notation.

Don't use a percussion staff. You may have problems with collisions though.

Thanks. But i would like to have 4 "slashes" above those red notes in your picture. When i use "slash" notation, even when I select

"show notes in other layers", they don't appear. When I use "rhythmic notation", the red notes are slashes.

Tom Skublics,

If I understand you correctly, you have a staff style that makes the Layer 1 notes appear as Rhythmic Notation (perhaps with Stems Up), right?

You have edited the staff style Rhythmic Notation so that it shows Notes in Other Layers, right?

You have entered some notes in another layer (perhaps Layer 2), and these notes, too, appear as Rhythmic Notation, so that both the Layer 1 notes and the Layer 2 notes appear as Rhythmic Notation, right?

Unfortunately I am unable to duplicate the problem.

For me the Layer 1 notes appear as Rhythmic Notation, and the Layer 2 notes appear as Normal Notation.

We may need some more info from you.

I am very sorry. What you describe is correct, but I am unable to duplicate the problem as well. i must have gotten confused in my explorations.

Doing the above, I can get what I want in the bars (slashes to tell the drummer to continue keeping time) PLUS notes in another layer to indicate extra "hits" and such....but I still have to remove the stems from the rhythmic notation in layer 1 and the slashes aren't movable, they are stuck on the 3rd line.

WHAT I REALLY WANT: is "slash notation" with the ability to have notes appear in other layers (just like my other post about "one bar repeat" notation (Staff styles layers question) which you answered and the solution works.) It doesn't seem to work with slash notation.

And ideally, i would like to be able to move the slashes up and down to avoid collisions:)

Here is an example:

THANK YOU for your time and patience.

Tom Skublics,

In the graphic example you attached, the Slash Notation has been moved down by two scale steps.

To do so, move the Stem Reversal down by two scale steps, from -4 to -6:

Tom Skublics,

It DOES seem to work for me.

I just created the example you posted - with notes above lowered Slash Notation.

Thank you. Yes this works for me too! Been using Finale for almost 20 years now;

didn't know about that "other" staff appearance choice and those adjustable parameters!

I am using Finale 26 on a PC and I cannot seem to get the effect described above to work. I want rhythmic notation staff style to be stems up and above a melody in a different layer so the piano player can double the melody and have the chords. Please help if possible!

But now, how do I get the slashes to display further up on the staff?

Go back about 5 posts.

In the STAFF STYLES, select "other" and change the stem reversal number to -2 (say) and your slashes will move up.

That is, larger negative numbers move the slashes lower in the staff.

Use a custom staff style to mode the Stem Reversal position.

The slashes are always positioned at the Stem Reversal position.
