Please consider adding the ability to copy text formatting of lyrics when measures with lyrics are copied to another staff.

Currently, when using the selection tool, copying a measure of notes with lyrics attached does indeed copy the lyrics, but text formatting like underlining, bold, Italics are not copied to the new measures.

It is quite time consuming to have to re-do any custom underlining, bold, or italics within the copied lyrics.

(Maybe this is a bug???)

Thanks!

Hi Doug:

Good catch! Yes, I consider this a defect. I've written it up as FIN-5421. We will take a look to see where the failure is happening. Thank you for reporting this issue.

Could it be done by copying the lyrics in the lyric window to another verse, and click-assigning from there?

I’ve had problems when trying to work on lyrics in the score.

Yes, Mike, you can do it that way, and I often have to. I find typing directly into the score to be fraught with problems for anything other than the simplest of scores. The trouble is that the Lyrics window has its own problems (losing its place when switching away from lyrics entry and back again being just one that comes to mind), though it has recently improved a bit.

Hi Simon and Mike:

We have a group of stories around the lyric window as well as Type Into Score. I agree this is a fragile piece of the code that needs to be modernized and cleaned up. Thank you for the feedback.

Dear Finale Developers,

I'm arrangement lots of music every day for choirs. I need to copy music including lyrics all the time. In the past twenty years, I always first copy the notes without the lyrics. (By unsecting "lyrics" in the filter.) Next I clone the lyrics. In this way your formatting is preserved.

The reason for this is that if you copy the notes including lyrics, the lyrics are duplified (!) in the lyrics window (at the bottom of the existing lyrics). And that is something I definitely do not want. I want all lyrics just once in my lyrics windows, so I can change or correct lyrics easily later on.

Considering this matter, I would have a wish that would save me a huge amount of time. This follows from the story above. I would love to be able to copy music including lyrics, but without the lyrics being duplified. That is, the notes that are copied will refer to the same lyrics in the lyrics windows as the original notes. If this could be implimented (may just like an option in the lyrics options) I would be eternally greatful!

Yours sincerely,

Ah, for the days when we had a user advocate in Michael Johnson. Even though nothing ever came of it, it was nice to think that someone at Finale actually cared…

Tijs,

I understand your wish and would not be sorry to see it as an option. I expect the reason Finale copies your lyrics is so that, if you change a word later in a composition, it does not make a change earlier in the score that you did not expect.

I admit that sometimes, when I wished to export lyrics to have a printed copy, the duplication makes the process less convenient for that purpooe.

I understand why the lyrics are duplicated in first instance. That's why it definitely should be an option and it could not be simply changed.

For me as an arranger of pop and jazz, there is even more reason to use the genuine purpose of the lyrics window. I often write sounds in accompanying parts, using 'doo be doo wah' en 'pah dap pap pah' and so on. It happens a lot that I want to use a different sound later on and I want it to be replaced everywhere in the score. So it would really help me a lot!

Bye!

I usually put backup lyrics into a different section: Chorus or Section so they do not interfere with the regular lyrics.
