I created a 3-staff score with Wizard. I then added 128 measures. Because I needed to see my score in a certain way, I hid staffs when they were empty, using the "staff" dropdown. Entering music went very smoothly until I reached the point where there were only 2 staves showing. After that, all of the remaining systems showed only 2 staves. Why did the score revert to showing only 2 staves? I don't want to add another staff, because really, the score already has 3 staves and it will be very confusing and time-consuming. Any ideas? Thanks. I tried deleting the remaining measures and then adding more, but only 2 staves showed again in the empty measures.

Because you told the program to hide the empty staff.

  • If you enter the music first and format later, you won't have this problem of losing the third staff.
  • If you click on a measure stack where you need the third staff and then switch to Scroll view to add the notes you need to add to the third staff, you can then switch back to page view if you wish and should see all three staves at that location (and possibly for hte remainder of the piece unless you hide empty staves again.
  • Every program--Finale, Sibelius, Dorico--has an optimal work flow. You save a lot of time and grief if you learn it and use it instead of trying to work against it..

I really appreciate this forum. The economics of music mean that many projects don't have the budget for professional copyists, so some of us learn just enough of Finale to get in trouble. This makes your help vital, because we're on to the next recording, performing, or composing project without really learning Finale the way you obviously have. Thank you all most sincerely for your help.

It "sort of" works to go back to Scroll View. In there I can see all 3 staves, but when I go back to Page View, only the system I'm working in shows all 3 staves again. The rest of the page reverts to two staves. Seems like the best thing is to not hide the staves until I'm done?
