I am transcribing a piece by Bernardo Storace, 17th century, who uses unusual notation, that is, f.i., after a dotted minim instead of a minim he has a quaver with the head of a minim, or instead al two minims two quavers with minim head as in the attached example. Of course I can do that, just changing the notehead, but than I get problems because of the durations of the measure, which automatically is filled with rests. I wonder whether this is possible with FINALE or not.

Hi Umberto:

Thank you for posting your question. What an exciting project you are working on. Yes, this is completely possible in Finale and kudos to Peter for providing answers. Good luck.

Yes, this is possible with Finale.

The easiest way is probably setting the real time signature to 3/1.

You can set a different “display time signature” of e. g. 3/2.

Enter the “open notehead 8ths” as a (not displaying) tuplet, e. g. {1 Eighth in the space of 1 Quarter}.

Or {2 Eighths in the space of 2 Quarters}.

Or {3 Eighths in the space of 3 Quarters}.

&c.

Use the utility to change the noteheads on the 8ths to open noteheads. (Utilities menu > Change > Noteheads…
