Could MM perhaps make available a "legacy" version of Finale that can open old files and convert them to MusicXML or even just include such functionality within a new release of Finale? That would certainly be useful. Some of my old files date back to 1995 if not earlier. And I'm hearing from some folks on other forums who have similar old files and can no longer open them.

I have never had a problem opening my old files—I go back to 1989. Seeing them, OTOH, often required font substitution as there have been many changes over the years.

Feel free to send me one and I'll try to open it. mike ( at ) halloranmusic dot com

Actually I just realized my files lacked the .mus extension. They certainly do open.

Oddly, someone on that other Finale forum has an old Windows Finale file and he couldn't open it nor could I. Maybe because it's a PC Finale file from when there were differences in OS file formats for Finale? Not sure if there were such differences but it's all I can think of. Thanks.

Lacking the .mus extension would certainly do it. Before OS X, Mac apps didn’t require it to be part of a file name. In OS 9, it was optional. In OS X, it was required but displaying it was still optional. Early builds of OS X could often read he files anyway.

Finale was originally a Mac application. I don’t remember when it ported to Windows.

I don't remember specifically when it was ported but I remember getting ads in the mail, I think for F97, in which it came with the Windows version "for free" to encourage us Mac users to switch. As if.
