I can't print Finale scores in F27. The printer (an HP 426) goes into an Error State.
I can print from Office and Windows, but not Finale.
If it's any help: this is a box recently upgraded from W7 to W10, and Finale upgraded from 2008 to 27.
You will find current drivers and firmware updates here. You will need the driver for Windows 10 64 bit.

Windows has generic print driver so I am not surprised that you can print from MS Word. I would almost bet all the printer features aren't available though. As the others have advised you need to d/l the latest print driver and software from HP.
Personally I have poor success with HP printers in general. I have a HP Office Jet large format printer that is sitting inches away from a Brother Business Smart Pro printer. The Brother is head and shoulders better than the HP. My normal score print is concert size 9x12 which the Brother handles without notice but the HP is a PITA to get it to print 9x12.
... but no success; same Error State.
My HP printer gives me unexpected results from time to time. HP support although they tried was not able to help. The Brother sitting right next to it works flawlessly. When the HP screws up I run the HP Doctor and it fixes it for the moment or until the next time. You can d/l the HP Doctor from the HP web site and try it. It is free.
Both of my large format printers are connected wirelessly. You may want to try it using the USB port instead of wirelessly. When I run out of ink for the HP it will be history. I'll never buy another one.
Computer and printer are exactly connected via the blue USB cable that came with the printer - no hub, no network, no wireless. Maybe the cable is bad? Maybe I should try a different port?
HP Doctor 5.7.1 was no help. (It can't even decide whether 5.7.1 is the current version.)
I've used HP printers and scanners for 30 years. Maybe it's time for a change.
There's always the possibility that the printer is the problem but I doubt it. HP Laserjets aren't known for dying at the same time you make a major OS update.
HP has both 32 bit and 64 bit drivers for Win10. You need to be running the 64 bit from the link I posted. Make sure that you are selecting it and not any of the drivers that migrated from Win7 to W10.
Cable? Probably not since it is an old one that has worked but it could be an issue. Because so many cables don't make the grade nowadays, look for one advertised as a USB Printer cable. These only support USB 2 and are backwards compatible with USB 1.1. These are quite inexpensive since they do not support higher protocols.
Davyd,
I used HP printers for years also. This one has been problematic from day one. Plus is is next to impossible to get it to print 9x12 inch paper. Do you happen to have another computer you can try it on? Perhaps a laptop?
It probably would not be so noticeable to me if the Brother didn't work perfectly and is very easy to set up and even easy to get it to print my 9x12" scores. When the HP works it works fine except for printing 9x12.
The guy at HP support acknowledged there was known issues with their printers. That is why they developed the HP Doctor.
I tried a different USB port. That didn't help. I'll see about getting another cable.
Printer driver was selected and installed by an HP technician. I have to believe he knew what he was doing.
I have no other computer. (Could I even have F27 on more than one computer with only one license?) Maybe I didn't properly register or configure F27?

The HP support guys were all helpful just not able to get my HP to work as well as the Brother. Don't get me wrong here because when the HP printer works it woks just fine. I am just going to continue to use it until I run out of ink which I have a couple new cartridges left so it will be a while.
Maybe I didn't properly register or configure F27?
If you don't register Finale it won't print or save after a trial period. At least that's how I remember it working perhaps MM has changed that? The demo won't print at all.
Could I even have F27 on more than one computer with only one license?
Yes, you can install it twice. For me that is one on my big desktop and two on my laptop which I sometimes take to rehearsals with me. I almost never do that though but it nice to know I can if need to.
You know you can print a test page right from the printer. Can you do that? Does it do that ok? I still think you have to have a problem with your computer, setup, or driver. I doubt it is the USB port or the cable.
Did you try disabling the print spooler and restarting it. Sometimes a print job will get stuck in the print cue so make sure you clear it out.
Test page prints OK.
I'm not getting reminders that I have to register Finale, so I'm thinking it's properly registered. Maybe there's some setting that isn't set properly?
I can save the .musx file as .pdf and print it that way, but that seems like an unnecessary extra step.
Print spooler - perhaps, but other types of files (Word, Excel, PDF) all print properly, so I doubt anything is stuck.
Here is the thing.......
Windows has generic print driver so I am not surprised that you can print from MS Word, ...
It is a lot different printing a text document vs a Finale file. You really need to make sure you have the correct and most up to date print driver there is. Windows itself is not great at updating the print driver so you need to do it yourself. Go the the printer manufacturer website and check for the newest driver.
If you can save a Finale file then it is probably registered correctly with MM. Saving and printing are disabled in the demo version. When you launch Finale for the first time, the Authorize Finale dialog box appears. This dialog box continues to appear each time you launch Finale until the product is authorized. You have 30 days to authorize your copy of Finale. After 30 days, printing, saving and sharing are disabled until your copy of Finale is authorized. You went through the authorizing process when it asks you to do so at the very beginning after you start Finale? In Finale you can click the tool icon Help>About Finale and see if you have a serial number. The Computer ID and Authorization Code are computer-specific and will only work on the given computer installation.
None of us will help you if it is not a registered version.
Printer driver: I'm reiterating that an HP technician installed it. I don't know how I can improve on the work of a professional.
Authorizing Finale: I'm seeing the version number (27.3.0.137), serial number, and computer ID. So I'm confident that I've registered and authorized the software properly. Should it matter that this is an upgrade (from 2008) and not a start-from-scratch fully new install?
Maybe a new cable might help; a USB 2.0 cable isn't that expensive.
Documents are clearly being sent to the printer. Its readout shows the "Printing" icon, which never goes away until I cancel it myself, which I do in response to the error message that appears on the screen, and in the print queue display.
I find it impossible to believe that I'll need to get a new printer. I'm sure the Brother line is superb, but I can't believe that an HP can't be made to work.
Upgrade or form scratch it doesn't make any difference to Finale. Sounds like you are golden on the registration and authorization.
We'll assume you do have the latest driver.
But I will tell you from my personal experience with HP and their tech support. My HP printer works fine for almost any print job I have except printing on 9"x12" paper. Contacting HP support which are very friendly people but the hour or so they tried could not get it to print 9"x12" size paper reliably. Secondly, the printer goes to sleep and when it does it can't be used until HP Doctor is run on it.
A new USB cable is inexpensive so why not but I doubt it will make any difference.
Do you have a PDF printer utility like CutePDF or doPDF? Can you print PDFs to any of them from Finale? If you can it almost tells you Finale is sending the correct info to the printer so problems have to come after that.
I am out of suggestions beside what I have explained. Perhaps you could contact MM support. I don't think they trouble shoot printers but, hey, they may have seen this problem before and have a solution. I can tell you that Finale 27.3 will print correctly to an HP printer as long as it is letter or legal size.
A new USB 2.0 cable (US$15) didn't help - same problem. The printer is aware that it's been sent a document, using regular letter-size paper, but can't seem to process it. I continue to affirm that the up-to-date printer driver was installed by an HP technician.
@Ernest Biggs: Maybe I do need a new, non-HP, printer, but I can't swing the expense right now. At least I can save the file as PDF and print it that way (with FoxIt PDF Reader) so not all is lost.
Well darn. I don't want you to buy a new printer on my say so. You need to make that decision. I didn't think a new cable would help so I am not surprised. If you do decide on a new printer look at Brother printers. I have had three of them and all three work flawlessly and with little effort.
I'll tell you what if you would like to send me the Finale file I will try and print it. If I can and all is good perhaps you do need a new printer. If that sounds like a plan here is my email e e b i g g s 1@g m a i l dot c o m of course no spaces.
