Whenever I add a staff to an existing score, many dynamic markings will suddenly appear throughout the piece in seemingly random places that I need to then go hunt through the piece and remove. It's a huge inconvenience and waste of time. The rumor is that they are left over from previous versions of the file, but this also happens in brand new files, so that can't be the issue. I've asked around in the forums and everyone is familiar with the phenomenon and is equally frustrated. It has been a long-time bug. Can you please fix that?

Thanks!

I came back to post about this problem and see now that I've already posted about it. I'll include a screenshot this time to help illustrate what I mean. I've spoken to many other PowerUsers and they all experience this problem, too.

I've never come across this problem in thirty years working with Finale and cannot imagine what could be causing it. You say you import MIDI from DP?

I have never seen it either. You might want to post this in the Problems section of this forum. Are sure you don't have something on other layers?

The only thing I can conceive of would be something in the way staff sets or groups may have been formed in DP.  That might explain why the dynamics are being attached to multiple staves. Check your score list in Expressions, to see which staves are assigned.

From the manual:

  • Score List • Edit. Choose the Score List you would like to apply to the selected category from this pop-up menu. Score Lists are designed to accommodate expressions that often appear on multiple staves in a consistent arrangement. For example, tempo markings often appear above the top staff as well as above the top staff of instrumental sections. Click Edit to open the Score List dialog box where you can edit the selected Score List.

I've seen this before, but not for a long time, years ago. I remember this occurring when I would use an existing file, make a copy of it, clear all of the contents, then use that blank file for a new piece. Random expressions would appear in the middle of nowhere in the file. Like I said, I haven't seen this behavior in a long time.

These aren't really random. It looks like an expression was entered, and it showed up, aligned vertically, on multiple staves. That looks like a Score List issue.

Travis, since this worthless forum doesn't allow uploading Finale files (Really? On your own forum?) would you be willing to upload it to DropBox, and post the link, so we can have a look? Even a single page would work.

… That looks like a Score List issue …

Or perhaps an Assignment List issue?

The expression category Dynamics does not have the feature “Score List”.

But for dynamics you can create as many Assignment Lists as you need (= for all possible staff combinations).

This is done in the dialog box Assign to Staves.

How to get there:

Context-click on the dynamic’s expression handle.

In the context menu, choose ”Assign to Staves…”.

Thanks for the clarification, Peter. I was speculating from memory. Never a good plan…
