Charles Gao,

The pedalling can be added as a smart shape (using the Smart Shape Tool), or as an articulation (using the Articulation Tool).

Your latest post reveals that you are using the Articulation Tool.

1) Have you tried using the Smart Shape Tool instead?

2) It is not clear to me what alignment you need.

I can see two possibilities.

Perhaps you need both of them:

A. Move the Ped marking {left-right} until it is positioned exactly vertically under the “Ped note” (so that a vertical line will touch both the Ped marking and its note).

B. Move the Ped marking up-down until it is positioned at a specific vertical position (so that a horizontal line will touch all the Ped markings).

What do you need? A or B? (or both)

By The Way:

Does the word “horizontally” mean move left-right, as in A?

Dear Peter
thank you for reply

I think B is what I need , but of course A is good too,It will make the scores look "perfect".

by the way, I'm not quite sure what "Smart Shape Tool" is, I'm trying to find out it...

is this "Smart Shape Tool"?? but I can't see the pedal symbol, where is it??

this is what I want......(pedal symbol)

It seems to me the best way to achieve what you want is to simply create an expression (not an articulation) that says Ped. That way you can easily control a perfect and consisten placement in the score.

Command-Click (Control-Click in Windows) on the "star within a hexagram" icon to open a list of additional Smart Shapes, from which you can choose from a variety of Ped. symbols.

There are different ways in Finale to do this. I created the "Ped." symbol as a text expression and changed the positioning of the expression. The "Ped." is horizontally aligned by default. Is this what you're trying to do?

… is this "Smart Shape Tool"?? but I can't see the pedal symbol, where is it?? …

Option-click on the icon for the Custom Line Tool (= the highlighted hexagon in the screen shot).

You will get to the Smart Line Selection where you can select/edit a Smart Line (or create your own).

NB:

In the Smart Line Selection there are many ready made smart lines (more than 40, I think).

To browse through them all you have to scroll down.

Dear MIKE HALLORAN,PETER THOMSEN,Michael M,J ADRIAN VERKOUTEREN

thank you all to help reply my question.

and I think It's useful to use "Smart Shape Tool" to align the pedal symbols.

yes the long-time problem has solved finally.

thanks to PETER THOMSEN

I never know there are more symbols in the hexagon in the "Smart Shape Tool".

It's amazing!

thanks you all, you are the best!

The ped symbol is in the Maestro font. For Windows, ALT+0161, and Mac, Shift+Option+8.

When I enter the custom SmartShape area (at least in Windows), it already has a Ped * option. I don't think I created it myself.

But to create the Ped marking as a text expression (in the Expression Designer) as Jeffrey Turner suggested, you need to know where the Ped symbol is located in the Maestro font.

Mike Rosen has listed the keystrokes necessary to create this expression.

The problem is not you but the program. This is just one of many examples that demonstrate how Finale, despite its versatility, is embarrassingly poorly designed.

Peter,

If others do not already have the Ped * option in their SmartShape custom menu, or if they want it as an expression instead, then yes; they would need Mike Rosen's steps. But in my custom SmartShape menu the Ped * combination already exists and has for years. If this was something I created, I do not recall it. I have had this option in my versions of the program for years and years.

Adrian, you didn't create it and forget doing it. It's in my custom lines, as well.

Charles Gao,

Perhaps we are misunderstanding you.

By your word “where”, did you mean how to get to the Expression Designer?

Two ways:

1. Choose the Expression tool icon, and double-click a note or measure. The Expression Selection dialog box appears.

2. Click Create, or click an expression, and click Edit.
