Smart Shape glitch ruins file

9/7/2023 I am creating a jazz band score, and my file began to be inoperable: Hourglass for several minutes after every click. Made a new file, copied and pasted parts til I found the offending part..and found the glitch is not deletable. Created another new file: Entered a small crescendo under smart shapes, and noticed the hairpin did not attach to any note....and then checked this: Under Documents tab-Data Check-File Maintenence and OK over 22,000 smart shapes had been created (none were visible in the file) and would not undo......This is nuts and this (5th!) score is now polluted.

Refresh your preferences, and see if that makes a difference.

This is not normal behavior for the Smart Shape tool so there is no bug like this I have ever heard of. Not that means anything because I don't know everything about Finale.

Other than trying what MikeR has suggested there is no way to diagnose your problem without way more info or even better seeing the actual file. I can't offer up MikeR but I am pretty sure he and I know I will take a look at the musx/mus file to try and find the issue. His email is in his sig. Mine is e e biggs 1 at gmail dot com. Using no spaces and normal email verbiage.

If resetting the preferences fixes it there is no reason to send your file to either of us. Sometimes preferences get corrupted who knows why?

Found the reset preferences and am back in the score, and the reset preferences seemed to delete the 22,000 smart shapes seen in data check, and so far it is attaching crescendos and slurs like its good old self....REALLY appreciate the help! Although I reopened one of the corrupted scores and it shows -32,205 smart shapes in data check, so I assume that file is still got the bug? Will email one of the corrupted versions, Ernest... Btw I did discover this bug mentioned on one of the forums from I believe 2016, but never saw a fix.

I know of no bug that happens like that with Smart Shapes and I have been using Finale since the 1990's. But that doesn't really mean anything because I don't know all there is to know about Finale. Just that I have never seen it. And, I may not be of any help but I will certainly take a look if you want.
