Hello All,

So - another ReWire question for the hivemind.  I'm currently using Finale 27 within Cakewalk by Bandlab as a ReWire softsynth.  Audio plays back fine, and everything is peachy - except for one major issue.

I use Speedy Entry to compose, and need to hear the pitches and noodle around while I am drafting out music for my film scores.  I've tried ReWire with both Cubase (no longer own) and Cakewalk, and I can't figure out a way to configure things so that Speedy Entry sounds my pitches out as I experiment on my keyboard.

I saw an old article where someone suggested switching finale to "Play Finale Through MIDI" but this does nothing other than making EVERYTHING (including playback) silent.  Are there any updated thoughts on how to get around this snag?  Thank you!

Not enough information. Let’s start with your OS.

Let's focus on the goal. Rewire/IAC/IAM is for syncing a DAW with Finale but, with Rewire depreciated, it only works as a playback device anymore. Since Win10 and 11 do not support RW at all anymore … doesn't mean it can't be done but it won't do what you want.

For Speedy Entry, you do need to set up so that your playback engine is MIDI/Softsynth (Finale's built in General MIDI engine) or VSTs such as Garritan Instruments for Finale (ARIA Player) or any other players and sounds you may have installed as compatible. Kontakt 7 requires VST3, not yet supported in Finale. The manual is your friend and there are tutorials on how to set this up in Windows.

Once you have the notes entered, then you can go back to RW to sync up your DAW to take advantage of its additional functionality including a Movie window if needed.

Thank you very much for the update on ReWire’s status - that’s really too bad.

And yes - totally all set with setting up playback while using Speedy Entry. I’ve actually been using Finale for over 20 years, so I have the basics down - my issue was only that Speedy Entry wasn’t playing notes back to me while connected with RW.

Really, it’s a shame - I guess Finale has sort of given up on film composers who actually write and orchestrate their music the traditional way, but there are plenty of us out there. That said, RW is useless to me if I have to keep bouncing back and forth between watching video and then blindly plopping notes down and hoping they sync up. Huge added step / time waster.

I guess I’ll stick with Finale 2012 for film scoring until the program eventually doesn’t work anymore, and then, who knows!
