I am not sure if it is a feature request topic, or a problem and question topic about using Finale in a way that I don't yet know how to.

I want to use Finale to write exercices books and harmony books that contain a lot of one to several measures long ultra-short piece of music that are totally independant one from another and fixed at a specific absolute position on the page (or maybe relative to an accompanying text). Some samples may have different systems / instruments / brackets / number of staves, key and time signatures, etc., and several of these samples are on the same line (y position from the page corner) or a bit vertically shifted for text accomodation. I succeeded making some pages with simple samples like in the test attached here above, but it's very time consuming making invisible staves / measures / measure bars / clefs time signatures changes to always visible / hidden / artificial hidden clef changes followed by change to visible original clef at 100% size on the right side of the measure bar, staves margins adjustments, brackets creation, etc... And after having successfully done everything correctly, I loss all when I try to insert a new sample or insert a new page in the book, or merge documents. The feature I request is the possibility to use Finale rather like a publishing software (like Microsoft Office Word or Publisher) where I can place anything -  in this case an ultra-short piece of music of several measures - at a precise position on the page, and this ultra-short piece of music must remain at his position, and totally insensitive and independant of the changes made to another ultra-short piece of music placed elsewhere in the same page. Eventually ultra-short pieces may be grouped or ungrouped with themselves or with text for the purpose of repositioning on the page. I don't need these samples to be audibly played, I only use the playing function to check for entry mistakes or forgotten accidentals. In short it will be very usefull if all automatisms in Finale can be disengaged for Finale to be used like a typesetting / publishing software where I can place everything I want anywhere I want on the page rather than a music production software that updates and displaces everything against my will. Thank you!

If you want to do this all in Finale (as opposed to a Desktop Publishing Program like In Design or Affinity Publisher, you might find it useful to create a Coda using the Coda plug-in and then study how Finale uses margins and other settings to create it. You might find similar techniques useful to position short musical examples side by side across the page.

I learned about this when I once needed to remove a coda and discovered how Finale managed to set them up.

I’m with Adrian on this. What you want is easy in any layout app including Word. A ‘down & dirty’ approach is to layout your staves with hidden measures fore and aft. Now, grab screen shots of your snippets from the Finale doc and drag them into a Word doc. As you drag each one in, double-click and select to align ‘’tight with text’’ from the graphics menu. Now you can resize as you please and drag each freely to any position on the page including outside the margins—Word won’t give an error when you do. If there’s text, it will flow around etc. I do this with church bulletins, presentations, Christmas letters (pictures instead of music) and the like. I have page layout apps including Quark but hardly use them anymore.

Thank you for your replies. I wanted to know if there were a better and faster solution in Finale than being forced to create and hide measures / staves / clefs, etc. I am using Finale since Finale Version 2 and I have always considered Finale being the Rolls Royce of music notation sotware. I am surprised, now 30 years later with version 27, that people tell me to use Finale with other softwares to do what Finale must be able to do by itself. I have just read another post here where people were replied to merge Finale documents by exporting the documents into PDF files and then use another software to merge the pdf files, because Finale's merge documents tool cannot be used without destroying all saved changes made. Instructing people to use Finale with other softwares is like telling me that the only way to go to some destination with the Finale Rolls Royce is to be seated inside the Rolls Royce while it is being towed by a tow company truck, as if the steering wheel and brakes are option not yet available!

Only two small options would make Finale usable to write music textbooks:

- the option to end a piece of music anywhere and to begin other different pieces of music in the same page, each pieces totally independant one from another,

- the option of positioning the staves of each of these pieces relative to the border of the page instead of relative to the preceeding staves.

- I would also suggest the option to select anything and make that selection fixed (immovable) on the page, insensitive to any automatic spacing / calculations.

Is this too much toask for or too complicated to program?

You’re telling me that what I do every week is too difficult while he doubts it can be done at all. The rest of my answer can be found there.

Those of us who post regularly do not work for MakeMusic and have no say in anything they do. We are experienced users, however. What you want is easy using Finale screen shots in a layout app or Word. With many notation apps, it is not.

“using Finale screen shots in a layout app or Word”
Are you serious? Using Finale to take screenshots?
I don’t even need to install the 2 Gigabytes Finale at all. I can just use the Petrucci font and type directly in the layout app or Word after having drawn 5 lines.
You don’t need to seat inside a towed Rolls Royce, just seat inside the towing truck!

Do you not know how to take screenshots on a Mac? The procedure is unchanged since on my Mac Plus in 1986.

https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/take-a-screenshot-mh26782/mac#:~:text=Press%20Shift%2DCommand%2D3.&text=Press%20Shift%2DCommand%2D4%2C,the%20mouse%20or%20trackpad%20button.&text=Press%20Shift%2DCommand%2D4%2C%20then%20press%20the%20Space%20bar.

In any case, what I've outlined is quite easy and looks good. If you have Word and follow the directions that I posted, you will see this. I'll make a video tutorial next week and post a link. Unfortunately, I'm way too busy to do so now.

I too have done many a tutorial with Finale screenshots in both Pages and Word. In fact, I just collaborated with others just doing Finale excerpts, which were inserted into a book on creating barbershop arrangements.

Ok, it’s enough, I go away. I only came to ask for a small help, and what I get is people that say are Finale “experienced users”, but in fact are experienced to take screenshots and downvote comments. Shame to you!

Did you read the other thread? I'm guessing that you didn't.

How many notation apps incorporate a full page layout editor? None. It would take a major rewrite to do so.

How many page layout apps incorporate a notation component? Again, None.

I suppose it would be nice if MakeMusic would hire a staff to work these pages but they have not. The volunteers who put in the time to research and answer questions are not compensated and do this on our own time to help others.

I suggest focusing on the task that you want to accomplish. You can already do it in Finale but don't like the process. I will make the video to show you how to do it easier but only because others may want to know, too. Can't be before next week as I am busy.

If anyone else wants to do this, especially MakeMusic Support, I'm more than fine with it.
