Using Finale 2011b on a Windows Vista Home Basic with Service Pack 2.

How do you create a triplet consisting of a quarter note, then a half note (to cover a duration of two quarter notes)?

Hi Mark:
Hope you figured this out. Entry of tuplets have always been difficult in Finale, along with most other notation programs. As we consider enhancements to Simple and Speedy entry, we will see if we can make it more intuitive.

Suggest you ask this on the Help forum rather than here on the feature request form.

This question has been asked and answered on the regular users' forum at least once a month since Finale first began. Might I suggest a Google search of the forum? I fail to see how not knowing how to perform a basic function qualifies as a "feature request."

I recently started using Finale on a Windows 10 computer. I'm trying to make a tuplet where instead of three eighth notes = 1 quarter, I have one quarter+1 eighth = 1 quarter. The Forum was shut down a year or  so ago it seems, and going to the Community brings this screen up. This is NOT a feature request, I'm just trying to learn what you call a basic function when I see no help at all.  Help???

My way is this (there are other ways and some are passionately committed to their method): enter an 1/8th note. Click the triplet tool to create a triplet of 1/8th notes. Delete the unwanted rests and change the 1/8th note you entered into a quarter note. Enter the other 1/8 note.

Judy Phillips,

Are you using the Simple Entry Tool, or the Speedy Entry Tool?

In the Simple Entry Tool:

Enter the first note.

While the first note is selected, define the tuplet via the shortcut (= Alt-9? or Ctrl-9? I am not sure).

Define the tuplet as {3 Eighths in the space of 2 Eighths}.

Then complete the tuplet.

Depending on how you enter notes (mouse? computer keyboard?) you may experience difficulties in entering a tuplet at the end of a measure.

Just de-select “Check for Extra Notes” (in the Simple menu), and you can end the measure.

In the Speedy Entry Tool:

When you use the Speedy Entry Tool the order is: first define the rhythmical value, next enter the note.

Ctrl-1 (opens the Tuplet Definition…)

Define the tuplet, and hit Return.

Enter the notes.

She already said that she could not find the QUESTIONS forum. Heck, I have a hard time finding it myself and I'm pretty conversant with these things.

Presto! Thank you Peter Thompson. My initial effort was at the end of a measure, so deselecting 'Check for Extra Notes' fixed the problem.

May I suggest that when going into 'Help' , clicking Community,  'Finale', then 'Questions' , you change the search box so it doesn't end you up at this screen. I was unable to search for uneven tuplets without ending up here. (I may be 80, but I spent years as a beta tester on a segment of SAP for U.S. applications, so am not a total nitwit although new to Finale)

Judy,

If you do not find an existing thread in the questions forum, you are fully entitled (welcome even) to start a new thread with your questions. That way we can all avoid any misunderstandings.
