I'm having trouble playing sounds with MIDI in Finale, as it's not emitting any type of sound. This is a problem if I need to use Hyperscribe as a work tool. I've made the necessary configurations without any success. I'm using a Mac. Could someone please guide me?

A few things to check :

Midi/Audio -> Play Finale via Midi

Midi/Audio -> Device Setup -> Midi Thru > Smart

Midi/Audio -> Device Setup -> Midi/internal Speaker Setup -> Playback to : SmartMusic SoftSynth

Midi/Audio -> Sound Map Priority -> SmartMusic SoftSynth should be on top of the list

ScoreManager : you should select SmartMusic SoftSynth under Device.

• Is the audio coming in and out on the Mac ? Check System Preferences -> Sound (input and output). Check the devices and their volume.

• Do you use a Midi keyboard for note input ? If so, verify the connections and is the menu option (in Simple and Speedy) "Use Midi Device for Input" selected ?

• Can you hear the notes played on the keyboard on entry ?

• If you enter a few notes (Simple Entry), do they play back ?

Could you put a file somewhere on the web (DropBox, Google Drive...) for us to take a look ? Not sure we can see all of your settings, but maybe something can be found.

I'm seeing 4 files, no .musx. Try sharing a zipped file.

If you have not let Finale access the microphone, it will not play back correctly. This used to happen automatically but Apple no longer allows it.

Thank you Mike,

But  I see the microphone preferences and it's ok, I don't think this is the problem

I checked your file. Everything looks normal, I was able to enter notes (Speedy) and hear them both on input and in playback. However, it is possible I don't see exactly how you set things up. For instance, Midi/Audio -> Device Setup -> Midi/internal Speaker Setup : did you select your midi keyboard under Input Device ?

Check the resulting file (after I have added a few notes) :

https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/r3bsr2zgq4lv68g51q4e6/MIDI-error-OK.musx?rlkey=f7fnop9udpxiru4u3l8h8m974&dl=0

Does it play for you ?

If nothing is wrong within Finale, there could be a problem in your midi setup (check the Mac's Midi Configuration utility for the connection of your midi keyboard and interface) or with your audio.

I know this sounds simple but make sure your volume is up. Make sure your mute button in the mixer is not on. I am connected to a MIDISport 2X2. I can see the MIDI data going out when I hit the keyboard. You could have a bad MIDI cable. Or you did not turn on the MIDISport so it will send out MIDI. If you have done all the things Michel has suggested, then take it a step at a time, trouble shoot, and you should find the problem.

After all these unsuccessful investigations, you should probably take a good look at your hardware.

Try another midi cable. Make sure that the Midi out of the keyboard goes to the Midi in of the interface and into the Mac.

Do you have a sequencer or another app, in which the Midi is functioning ?

Does your Mac play audio in other apps, Youtube videos for instance ?
