I'm editing a large orchestral score with Windows Finale 25. In the score I have for example one line for the two oboes. The 1st oboe part is set to display only layer 1. The second oboe part is set to also show layer one except when, as is usually the case there is activity in layer 2. On some occasions layerl one and layer two are in unison. If an accidental is necessary because for example in G major the note to be played is F natural ond not F sharp crosslayer accidental positioning kicks in and only one natural sign appears. If however in the next bar I want to have a cautionary accidental to remind both players in unison to play F sharp and want these accidentals to be in the part, crosslayer positioning does not work. Instead I have effectively a doublesharp in the score. If I hide the second sharp in the score it also vanishes from the part. In both parts I have the cautionary accidental I want. I see two solutions to ridding the score of the second sharp: 1) only put the cautionary accidental in the first oboe part and extract the second oboe part before printing, in order to add cautionary accidentals, and remove any layer one notes which are not necessary. or 2) use the accidental-mover tool to move the second accidental so that it is directly in the same position as the other one, and then respace the bar. Of course it wouldn't be a problem if cautionary accidentals in the part were not automatically linked to the score....
Does anyone have a better work-around?

It may be worth checking out the "Cautionary Accidental" plug in and running it on your Oboe 2 part. It's found under "Plug-ins/Note, Beam, and Res Editing > Cautionary Accidentals."

For some reasons I thought that there may be a "collapse feature for accidentals between layers like there is for rests of the same duration... but I'll have to explore a bit more in 25.

Hope that helps!

Thanks CJ, there is indeed a "collapse" feature for accidentals between layers. To get it working you go to Document opttions/Accidentals and activate "use crosslayer accidental positioning". My problem is that cautionary accidentals (to remind musicians that in the bar they are playing the changed accidental of the previous bar is no longer valid) , whether inserted manually or using the cautionary accidentals plug-in, are always shown in both score and linked part. There is no option like Show/hide in articulations or expression where by holding the ctrl key one can choose to show or hide in the score but not the part and vice versa....

I have been struggling with the same problem. Workaround:
- create a new expression that is simply a [natural / flat / sharp] in the correct font & size (in my case, Maestro 24 pt)
- hide the cautionary accidental in layer 2 (for example)
- attach the expression to the note, line it up with the cautionary that is visible in layer 1
- hide the expression in the score and in part 1; show it in part 2

this works for me – also the fact that it's a cautionary means that playback will work regardless. Not pretty, but at least you don't need to extract parts.
