Finale 2014d.v5545

OS X Yosemite 10.10.2

I bought this for our 12yo son as he enjoys composing and arranging, and have left him to himself as he has been playing with it this year.  It does seem that it often will not save his work, forcing him to print it out and re-enter it (annoying), and today it deleted the last 16 measures, which he had really worked hard to get to sound just right.

Is this normal?  Can it be fixed.  He is ready to throw in the towel and switch to Sibelius or something else.

This sound like it may be a directory issue.

Are there any type of restricted access/different accounts on the computer that your son is using? This could hinder the ability to create/save new files.

If there aren't any restrictions, then try this:

Open Finale and go up to the menu Finale 2014 > Preferences

From there, select "Folders" from the list on the left. Then make sure that "Music" files are going to a writable location (should be set up by default, mine is going to [User name] > Documents), but the location should be somewhere your son can create/access files such as the Document folder.

If everything is fine there, open a document in finale, save it as something else, and see what folder that document saves in. Wherever that file goes should be the place that the "Music" directory goes to.

Thank you, CJ Garcia!  I will try that.  I just updated his Finale to the current version, and authorized it, and now am updating his operating system to El Capitan, so I will have him look at the Preferences to get set, and hopefully that will solve the problem permanently.  Apparently if there were a problem with the authorization, it would not allow him to save, so I'm wondering if this upgrade and authorization will solve the problem, and we will do a tutorial on directing to a writable folder.

He is the only one who uses that computer.
