There are a few expressions (VS, for example) that I don't want to see in the score...and it would be great if that could be a category-level option. That way, it would just show up in the part and I wouldn't have to make a few extra steps every time.

This was ALMOST ok in Finale 2014.5 where you could select "Show in Part Only" or "Show in Score and Part" - though it wasn't something you could assign DIRECTLY to an expression.

Hi Matt:

You can do this now. Here's how:

Go to Document / Category Designer...

Select a Category that uses Score Lists (Tempo Alterations or Rehearsal Marks).

Duplicate...

Provide a name to your new category (Part Only)

Edit fonts and positioning as you see fit

In your new Category, choose a unique Score list (like Score List 8)

Click Edit next to it.

Maybe give it a new name (Parts Only)

Uncheck Score and Check All Parts

OK back to your score

Expression Tool

Design an expression with your new category .

Assign the expression.

It will appear in the parts but not the score.

Let me know if I've missed something. Thanks for posting.

Hi Adrian:

Thank you for the clarification that helps a great deal. I've opened ticket FIN-4333 to track this work. We'll see if we could get this done sooner rather than later.

Cheers,

Would it be possible for users to make new "Score Lists"? 8 seems limited for what one might want to do in a large orchestral score.

I agree with George Mohammed - there should be more than 8 Score lists available, I have exactly the same problem with V.S. or PAGE TURN.

I am just copying a big band score and each section has different V.S., so I have to create 3 new Technique Categories, where each needs to have its own dedicated Score list (IAW Trumpets, Bones, Saxes), so just because of V.S. I need to use three Score Lists exclusively for this reason.

The solution could be also to have a possibility to assign any of Expressions not only to certain Instrument by Right Mouse Click/Assign To Staves..., but have the option to choose whether the Expression should appear in Score and/or in Parts, in the same dialog box as well.

Or tell me better workaround, I might be following wrong path...

Similar troubles here with V.S. expressions and having to un-click "Show" or edit the expression assignment each time it's placed in a part. What is needed is user definable part-independent expressions so that expressions like V.S. will show only in the specific part at the specific measure and not show in the score.

A related example is using two sets of tempo indications when working on a large score. The default (as displayed in the large orchestral score) may be very large in a part so it is easy to duplicate the tempo marks category, reduce the font sizes in the new category and assign it to parts only. Problem: this will also change the size in the original tempo marks category.

Is this too difficult to implement?

Could Finale name (or otherwise indicate) which Score Lists are used by the program/template so that users know which are available for users to adapt without affecting expressions already in the program? As far as I know, only Score List 1 is the only one used by the program (for Tempo Marks and alterations), but I'd like the security of knowing for sure.

Hi Adrian:
Do you mean indicate if the score list is used by a category or if that category and subsequent score list are used by an expression in the score?

It is one thing to say that the score list is part of the category definition and quite another to say that you have placed Moderator in the score which uses the Tempo Marking category and uses the "Score List 1" score list.

And yes, as far as I know, all Finale default files, document styles, and templates only use Score List 1.

What I was after was to know, when I create a new category and create a custom score list for the category, that I am not overwriting a score list already attached to a Finale built in category by default. If Finale named Score List 1: Top Staff Default (or some such) and the others User Definable 1, User Derfinable 2,etc., then it would be clearer that the User Definable lists could be used and renamed without worry.

I feel I am tripping over my words but hope I have answered your question.

This isn’t exactly what I had in mind. I don’t want it to show up on every part…and I can’t make a score list for each individual part. Things like VS will be in different measures in each part.

Perhaps I'm missing something (entirely possible!) but couldn't you just add the V.S. as a technique expression which would only show in the part it is assigned to?

I do this all the time.

Ronald, that works…and is similar to my current workaround. However, it would be nice if within the category I could make it not show up in the score, either.

Got it.

I always use a copy of the score to generate parts (old habits die hard) so this is never an issue for me.

(Finale v26.1) Hello all, I am having a problem with the original function mentioned - I have my "Applause Segue" expression created in Score List 8 (Part Only), However there are two keyboard grand staves in my score, and I'd like this expression to only show up at the bottom of each grand staff. In the category designer, I unchecked both of the upper halves of the grand staves from the "Part" list, but they are still showing up in the parts on both halves of the grand staves. Can anyone help with this?

Can you show us a screen shot of this Score List?

Daniel Monte,

In the upper screen shot you have a check mark on Top Staff, and another check mark on Bottom Staff.

I suspect that you should un-check Top Staff.

Peter, that worked! Thanks a lot for the help.
