MacOS Sonoma

Finale v26

How do I create my own technique text with the line and arcs around it? I've tried duplicating the ones in Finale but the line on top disappears when I edit them.I'm referring to the ones like STRAIGHT, MUTE, CUP and so on below.

The “line on top” is made of “zero-width” font characters inserted between the letter characters.

Try this:

In the Expression Designer, in the text field, click to insert the blinker.

Then, move the blinker left-right with the arrow keys.

You will note that the blinker sometimes does not seem to move.

This happens when the blinker passes a “zero-width” character.

You can copy one of the “zero-width” characters to the Clipboard, and paste it where needed.

To select a character, hold down Shift while hitting the arrow key.

If Peter's suggestion does not work, you may have to upgrade to Finale 27 for Sonoma compatibility and MakeMusic Support.

Fritz Hansen,

You are using Mac Finale v27 - right?

Type the key combination for the Reverse Solidus character (which in text fonts looks like this: \).

Since I do not know your keyboard layout (- American keyboard layout? - English keyboard layout? - or?), I can not tell you what key combination you should type.

For me, it is {Option-Shift-7}.

Thanks for that info Peter. American keyboard layout. Opt Shift 7 doesn't work for me. I'll look in the user manual for instructions on what to type to create the enclosure—including the curved bracket on each end—but if you or anyone can point me to where those instructions are in the manual, that would be a big help. There's nothing about those characters under To Create an Expression.

Thanks Peter. I found an email from a different Peter from 2014 that referred to Broadway Copyist, which I apparently have but didn't see when I tried duplicating the enclosure. I did find Finale Copyist and was able to use the keys Peter F mentioned ten years ago to achieve the desired enclosure. But seeing where the various glyphs of a given font are shown is very helpful. I never would have found that on my own, or it would have taken a lot of trial and error searching through the various items under Font. Thanks again. Really appreciate it.

This is awfully cumbersome. Impossible to tell what you're copying until you paste it into the expression you're creating (or editing). I recall from years ago another procedure, also cumbersome but less so, where you typed the line between each letter. I can't recall the key combination for that line across the top. Does anyone know that?
