First the nitty gritty - I am running the latest release of Finale - 25.1.0.183  on Windows 10, which should also be fairly current, as it auto updates.

I have had this happen to me twice......  I am editing and adding to a work that I have created in this release (I am a newbie to Finale, after using another product for several years.  I have never had a prior release of Finale installed.)  All seems to be normal - I am moving forward, with the work, encountering no difficulties that I am aware of.  Then I go to save the document, which has been previously saved, closed, and reopened several times.  The save fails, with a message that states that a file is missing - from the name I would say it is a temp file used in the editing process.  Sorry, I don't have the exact message.  It gets worse, though - there is an open save dialog box now on the screen, open to the directory that I am working from.   There is nothing in the directory - the one file that I opened to start the editing is also gone.

I am able to do a select all, open a new document, and then save into the new document, so I haven't lost all of my work, but my blood pressure and heart rate were certainly elevated.

The document in question in not what I would consider large - approximately 230K; it contains about 15 instruments, and is currently 96 measures in length.

One thing I have noticed is that Windows 10 is in a "reboot required state" this time; not sure about the first occurance, as that was about a week ago.  Is this a bug with Finale, Windows, or something else?

Thanks for your assistance.

Jerry

PS - this does not occur at a predictable place that I am aware of, and certainly not every time I work on the composition.  I would have trouble trying to recreate the problem, but it has happened twice.

Were the files involved at some point created in a prior version of Finale? I've seen such problems with earlier version, but I have not experienced this problem in Finale v25 or with the v25.1 update.

Some believe the "cannot save" problem revolves around temporary Finale files in the Temp folder and suggest creating a separate temporary folder just for Finale temp files so you can clean it out manually.

I have only installed v25.   I did get an earlier version of v25 initially, but applied the maintenance package when it was released about a month or so ago.   The file that disappeared on me last night was created with the upgraded release, which Finale tells me is the latest available.

Is it a "regular" occurrence with the temp file problem to have the source file disappear too?

Lastly, how would one go about creating a temporary folder for the temp files?

Thanks for your reply,

Jerry

Some people have found that the "won't save" problem wipes out the prior file too. I have never had this problem, but others have reported it. Still, I have not heard much about it from those using Finale 25,

To create a temp files folder just for Finale, you create a folder and call it what you wish.

  • I called mine FinaleTmpFiles and put it in my Documents folder where it is easy to reach
  • Some users advocate a separate Finale folder for each version of Finale you use. Since I hardly use anything but the most recent version, it made no difference to me.

Then go to Edit > Preferences > Folders and in the Temporary Files row Browse to your newly created folder.

Adrian -

Thanks for the tips and the assistance.   I have created a temp folder following your instructions, tested it, and it is being used as expected.   Hopefully, I won't see this occur again!

Remember to delete all files in it every so often--while Finale is closed. In my case I can go weeks without worrying about cleaning it out, but I have a lot of free hard drive space.
