When you start up Pro Tools, Logic, Digital Performer, or Vienna Ensemble Pro 7, while the program is starting up you're given ongoing info about which audio plug-ins are being scanned for validation. By contrast, Finale gives you no such information—the program icon just keeps bouncing in the dock. Having that info is extremely useful in helping to diagnose start-up issues. Two days ago I tried to upgrade my Waves Creative Access subscription to V15—after five minutes waiting for Finale to open, I gave up. Then I did the same on VEP 7—it took just as long, but I could see what the program was doing. That's when I realized that Finale must have been doing the same thing. (There are 247 plug-ins! I know, I know—Waves. But I'm committed to it.)

Can Finale give us the same info? See attached screenshot of DP, captured scanning a plug-in.

I have 4x that number and know the pain—I also run DP. It’s only an issue when verifying the first time. Having nearly a thousand, Finale normally takes 20 seconds to load on my M2 Studio.

Some plug-ins will force a complete re-scan by Finale every time they are upgraded — NotePerformer definitely and there may be others. I avoid Waves so I have no idea if that forces it, also.

IIf a plug fails to load, the macOS will make three attempts before moving on. This has been true since Finder/System 5 nearly 30 years ago. You can see this in Console.app and the Activity Monitor.

In any case, Finale is now dead. There will be no more development.

After more than 35 years, we have made the decision to sunset the Finale music notation software and all of its associated products (PrintMusic, Notepad, Songwriter). We want to extend our deepest gratitude to all of our loyal and passionate users. Thank you for letting us be a part of the wonderful music you’ve made over the years.

If you would like more information on the decision to sunset our Finale line of products, please refer to the letter from MakeMusic President Greg Dell’Era.

Holy Gut Punch, Batman!! That's some letter. Thanks for commenting. Curious, though (while I'm trying to regain my balance)—when you say "the macOS will make three attempts before moving on"—do you mean three attempts per plug-in in ONE program start-up attempt, or that it will keep track of the attempts to load a plug-in in three different startup cycles?

Wow...

when the macOS runs into any problem while loading, it tries 3x per instance—in this case, a plug-in— then moves to the next.

Many of us learned all about this with the Mackie HUI plug-in in DP 8 over macOS 10.9 Mavericks. You could see it loading and failing in Console.app 3x then moving onto the next element. The fix was to reinstall DP. That was a long time ago.
