By now, the operation of this software should be efficient. I can understand the addition of new features and improved functionality, but it looks to me like there are operational changes made in each version. Once you find the simplest operation, then make it standard. Operations that are consistent through multiple versions should not be changed unless they absolutely HAVE to be.

Also, I get comfortable using a specific set of instruments in my writing. Its great to add more, but do not replace the old ones with a different version or remove what has been there for previous versions. The addition of new sounds makes me nervous that I may have lost my favorite instruments or they sound different.

I know people who have very old versions - version 12 and 9! They refuse to update because of these issues. This tool is most useful when you don't have to re-orient yourself or re-learn the functions / sounds that you are accustomed to using. I will not update from my current version until I know the learning curve will take minutes - not hours.

Maybe MakeMusic can offer a download and install that will run for 1 week to just try it out? As long as the older version(s) don't get clobbered in the process, this may make it easier to see what the upgrade is like. They can charge the credit card after one week after the download if we have sent an approval code?

Hi Lou:

Thank you for posting. As J Adrian and Mike pointed out, we do offer a fully functional 30-day demo of Finale v25 to check your workflows and see how the software behaves. I appreciate your perspective on workflows and tool selection. The development team does take all those factors along with many others into account when considering changes for future versions. We certainly do not make changes for the sake of change, but always in the interest of addressing technical debt, improved workflow, and the quality of output. In a free market economy, consumers vote with their money. If we've not added value for you, you have every right to remain on the version of Finale that works best for you. Our goal is to be adding value, fixing bugs, correcting design flaws, and improving the product.

Cheers,

Finale offers a demo version. In the case of Finale 25, it does not overwrite Finale 2014.5.

And the demo version is fully functional, except it does not include the Garritan sounds. You can use it for 30 days. After that, you can continue to use it, but without the ability to save or print.

And I have never had to unlearn anything with new versions. I might have had to learn how to use new features, but discontinued or removed features haven’t impacted me, they way they have some other people. I mever used the “Lite” scanning program, nor did I use the Tempo tool. So taking them away didn’t matter.
