Finale 25 (for Mac) brought a rewrite of the Print Dialog that included a number of annoying regressions. It is still quite deficient now over a year on.

1. There is no way to suppress appending "- Score" to the score when creating PDFs or PS files. (This also leads to nonsensical warnings about overwriting the score file when in fact the score file will not be overwritten.)

2. The Paper Size option in the print dialog does not match the options selecting in Page Layout.

3. In fact the Paper Size options are always set to the last setting I used in Finale 2014.5, as far as I can tell.

4. The score/part selection list also always is the same and seems to match the last selection list saved in Finale 2014.5.

5. When working with multiple documents, it always prompts with the last document name printed (for the PDF) rather than the current document.

What should happen (and what happened before Fin25) is:

The selection list should be captured and the page size selected should be captured. They should both be remembered the next time I open the print dialog on this document. The Page Size should also (perhaps optionally) be stored in the Page Layout settings for the document. If I am opening the print dialog the first time on this doc, it should initialize the Page Size setting from the Page Layout settings.

FWIW: I never print directly from Finale. I always print to PDF or in rare cases (when I have EPS graphics) to PS files. For all I know, this may be why I am seeing some of this behavior of not remembering my settings.

Robert Patterson,

I can only agree with you.

However, I must say that I prefer creating PDF files by exporting pages from the Graphics Tool.

I see the following advantages with exporting to PDF from the Graphics Tool:

1) It is a little faster than “printing” to PDF.

2) You get a true Black&White PDF.

When “printing” to PDF you get a color mixture rather than true Black&White.

This is something that users have reported for years.

3) The file size is smaller, mostly because the Graphics Tool embeds the fonts only once for the entire PDF file.

Wow. I had no idea you could do this, nor the color issues either. Is there a shortcut for parts, or do you have to print them each one at a time?

To export a part as a PDF you must be viewing the part.

When you have exported all the parts as PDF files, I suppose that you can “batch-print” all the PDF files “at one fell swoop”.

You can also combine the PDF files into one “parts-PDF”.

Great post Mr. Patterson - I couldn't agree more...

You can "Save as PDF" multiple parts (similar to printing) by clicking on the PDF button in the lower left corner of the print dialog box. Make your part/score selections as usual, then click (and hold) the PDF button/popup to reveal a few choices for saving/viewing. If you choose "save as pdf", all selected score/parts from the print dialog box will be saved in a batch process and appear as individual files. Let the process work - it will auto-title each file based on the file name and part name.

Feature request:  Regarding exporting as PDF from the EXPORT menu - it would be a significant time saver to be able to export multiple parts - both as individual files selected from a list (similar to printing parts) - and also as a single, multiple part, combined PDF.  Many of us spend a lot of time exporting and then combining PDF files to send out for proofing or to clients who simply don't want or need 20+ separate PDF files from a single large project.

Many users will default to using the "Print to PDF" option (Mac OS) - it does work to batch save the selected subset of score/parts, but you still end up with individual PDF part files. Also - when those "printed/saved" PDF files are eventually printed on a really high end (2400+ dpi) printer -  they rasterize noticeably longer per page and appear to print a little less crisp then the "exported" PDF files (I believe this has been explained elsewhere in the forums).

If anyone is looking to combine multiple PDF part files - check this out:  http://combinepdf.com.  It is one of many free on-line (upload/download) PDF merging sites. There are many out there - some better/faster than others. This one has a 20 file limit per instance.  https://www.pdfmerge.com is another free site.

Adobe Acrobat (Pro version) isn't free - but will give you total control when combining multiple files - plus it allows for convenient page sorting and rearranging during the process. The resulting combined file is also smaller in size.

Hmm. These comments appear to be about Windows Finale. I can't find an "export as PDF" option in the Mac export menu. Just to clarify, by "print to PDF" I mean opening the Print Dialog and choosing the "Save as PDF" option. This may not be obvious to a Win user, but on Mac the option Save as PDF is baked into the print dialog for ever application by the OS. So it becomes synonymous with "printing" to PDF.

Sorry for the confusion - Finale Mac all the way on my end...

From within Finale:
1. Highlight the GRAPHICS tool
2. Mouse up to the menu bar -  GRAPHICS > EXPORT...

The screenshot below shows the dialog box that appears... from this dialog box you can 'export pages' as PDF. This option only works with the currently visible score/part. So - to do every part with this process, you would need to export the score, then switch to each individual part one at a time and repeat the process. This is what I was referring to as needing an upgrade in functionality in my previous post.

Oh, I see. Thanks for the clarification. I had gathered that from Peter Thomsen's post, but either way it's a great trick I didn't know before. And I agree it needs part support. (And combining all parts into a single PDF.)

I'll probably certainly start using this for scores. Not sure yet about parts.

I must admit that I have not tried it, but I think that you could write a compound FinaleScript script that

1) switches to the next part, (in Mac Finale the hotkey is ⌥⌘. = Option-Command-period)

2) exports the part as a PDF file.

Then assign a keyboard shortcut to trigger the script.

With a such script you can export the parts one by one:

trigger script,

wait for the PDF to be created,

trigger script,

wait for the PDF to be created,

trigger script,

wait for the PDF to be created,

&c.
