Hi There,

I'm a long-term Finale user (currently 25, Windows 10 64bit Pro) but I am very far from being an expert and I need help!

I've recently invested in Kirk Hunter's Concert Strings to supplement my Garritan libraries. They're working fine and I'm getting some good results from them, but I just can't figure out how to get them to play back the notated glissandos. I've tried many different patches, switched the legato and sustain on and off and fiddled with the 'outside world' midi in Kontakt 5 - all to no avail. The problem is I don't really know what I'm doing, which is probably evident from my post ;)

Forgiveness for my ignorance and any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I'm not familiar with the KH stings, so take my advice for what it's worth. When you say "notated glissandos" do you mean fast string runs? Or do you mean a portamento type slide between notes? How does the glissando sound if you try it just with GPO?

Fast string runs are difficult to achieve using samples. So much so, that some companies put out specialty sample libraries of just string runs. It sounds like you might just have to use trial and error, trying each articulation, if you have controls which affect ADSR, that might be helpful as well.

Oh thank you Jeffrey. :)

It's the portamento slide I'm after. It works excellently well with GPO 5's strings, both stock and orchestral, but it doesn't quite fit with what I wanted. I hadn't thought of fiddling with the ADSR, so thank you for that, I'll give it a go and report back. Kirk Hunter actually handles runs quite well, although I think you're right in that at a high tempo it might sound a bit GMish. Possibly I will have to have a go at adding a separate EQ process to the GPO strings and see if I can match everything up. But if you can think of anything else, I will ask that your karma comes back to you immediately.

Thank you for your very helpful reply. I'll let you know how I get on.

For what it's worth, the string libraries that I use have portamento as an option under legato techniques. If KH doesn't have this, I'm not quite sure how to fake it. Good luck.
