So I am having an issue with percussion parts, and their names at the beginning of staves. At the beginning of the piece, I would like percussion one to be on a mallet instrument. However, that changes the percussion 2 part to be percussion 1. Also, if I change instruments in the middle of the piece, the name of percussion 1 at the beginning of the staff will become glockenspiel instead of percussion 1. What should I do? I am using a Windows PC with Finale v25. Thanks!

The way that US publishers handle this is very simple. Label it Percussion1, 2, etc.... On the first score page, under the Percussion 1 name, list all of the instruments which will be played on the staff. Then with a text expression label each new instrument as it comes in. That's it. The only time we list the specific instrument as a staff name is when that's the only instrument being played.

On subsequent pages only list Perc.1, etc...  (not individual instruments)

Oh, I knew that, I’m just wondering how to do it.

  • Have you tried using the Name column of the Score Manager to set the name for each  staff?
  • Have you investigated defining staff styles to change staff names later in the score (if desired)?
  • The text used for instrument name changes that Jeffrey mentions can be accomplished using custom created Expressions attached to positions in your score.
