Windows 7, Finale 25, GPO4

Before I upgrade to Finale 26 and GPO5, I would like to get better acquainted with what I have--sort of to get a running start... silly perhaps, but nonetheless... :-)

Hi all,

So, say I have a violin set to play back with GPO4 "Violin 1 Solo KS" and want to change it to "Violin 3 solo KS" somewhere in the score--just to change up the timbre, etc, and then back again. How can I do that?
I have tried "Utilities/Change Instrument..." but the list is limited, and does not show the Garritan choices.

On a similar note, I have just discovered the "Violins Lush Mutes" instrumentation in GPO4:
Is there a way to choose "mute" and then back to normal anywhere in the score for violin solo or section as one would change from arco to pizzicato?

Thank you!
:-)

Once you use Change Instrument in the score, you will find an additional pull-down arrow in the Score Manager, where you can specify any Garritan instrument you own to replace the one Finale may automatically assigned.

Thank you, Adrian,

I have attached two JPEGs for you.

The first represents selecting the 2nd bar and then selecting "Change Instrument"

The second is going to the ScoreManager to, hopefully, select a different string choice.

I guess I am missing something in your explanation. In my test example, the first bar of Violin I is to be Violin 1 solo KS, and the 2nd bar Violins Lush.

So, my question is: how do I change a Garritan instrument mid-score?

Hope I make sense :-)

If you wish to use layers (rather than Utilities > Change Instrument) to control your playback, then just write the notes you want played lush in the second layer, chosen by the small buttons at the bottom left of the screen.

Thank you, Adrian.

Yes, that makes sense.

So, I gather one cannot make a change of instrument otherwise, such as perhaps making a "patch change" or something?

If you are using Garritan sounds, you can assign different sounds to different slots in an Aria player and use an expression to send a CC command to change the staff to a different Aria slot. This has also been used to keep an instrument silent on one pass of a repeat and let it sound on another, only in this case one would switch to an empty Aria slot when the instrument needed to be silent.

This is not exactly the same as a Program Change but is comparable.

Adrian and JohnG

THANK YOU !!

You finally got through to me--thank you for your patience.

Although I have worked with Finale for quite a while (starting in the early 90s when the icon was the little monk), in recent years I had been sporadic until a revived sense of purpose returned. However, I did not know I had not installed the GPO4 or GPO5 until this past week :-0

So, this is really new to me.

The layers idea made some headway, but Adrian, your latest screenshot using the Expression Designer finally pushed me across the threshhold.

I've tried using layers and then the Expression Designer to assign Channels (which is what I really want.

And JohnG--I had no idea I could open multiple ARIA players simultaneously--that will be my next project.

Gosh! Those sounds in GPO5 are incredible :-)  !!  :-0

Thank you, again,

Until next time... ;-)

Hi all!

So, just recently I have been trying to find a good, full-bodied alto saxophone -- and a tenor.

I find the "Jazz" alto sax to be tinny and pinched, and also very weak in volume. In an ensemble, I have to assign "f" when everyone else if "mf" and boost it in the "Mixer" to full, and everyone else at a maximum of 3/4 volume, usually less.

Searching for answers, I stumble upon a very simple, yet effective, way to change (switch) instrumentation on any given staff.

Here is the link to "the finale blog" article:

Hope this helps others :-)

Vanessa,

I don't know if you've found your saxophone sounds, but if not you should check out Note Performer. This is a separate paid product not from MakeMusic, a library of sounds which are IMO better than Garritan. And saxophones are included. If playback is important to you, you should look into this.  There is a free 30 day demo you can try out. It works very well with Finale 26.
