Can I ask a style question in this forum? When should I use hairpins and when should I use text expressions like cresc. and dim.? Is it OK to use both in one piece? I am writing piano music. (Finale 26 on Windows 10, though it doesn't matter for this question)

Generally, for long passages use text. Ted Ross, author of "Teach Yourself the Art of Music Engraving," recommends no more than three measures for hairpins/wedges.

Thanks, George, for the info.  That basically agrees with what I thought.  Was just wondering if there were any official rules about it.
