When entering an "accelerando" or "accel." marking, I often place a dotted horizontal line Smart Shape directly to the right of the word, to indicate the length of the desired accelerando (including across systems if relevant). If I do this using a Smart Shape, both the beginning and end of the line attach to beats, so the line resizes automatically. However, since it is not a Tempo Alteration Expression, that extension line will only appear in the linked part that corresponds to the staff where I entered it (commonly the top line of the score). The "accel." marking will appear in all parts in the score, since Finale correctly deems this a tempo marking. But the accelerando extension Smart Shape has to be entered manually in each part (or put into every line of the score and then hidden, one part at a time). I would love to be able to be able to designate a horizontal extension line Smart Shape as a Tempo Alteration, so that it appears correctly in all linked parts even when only entered in one part.

BTW I know that you can create a horizontal dotted line in the Tempo Alteration category of the Expression Designer. While such a line will show up in all linked parts, it's not "smart"—its start and end aren't attached to beats. That ends up being more work to adjust it in each part than simply entering a Smart Shape in each part would be.

UPDATE: As a commenter notes below, someone posted a similar idea two years ago. I say, vote here and vote there! Here's the link to the other one. "smarter" smart shape score list assignation

Thanks,

Peter

Thanks, Harald—I definitely will! I have added your link to the main part of my post. I searched for "accelerando," "extension" and "horizontal line"—didn't think of "Smarter smart shape"... . That said, I don't see the harm in voting in both places. :-) I'm leaving mine up because it covers a specific use case, and perhaps more people will find and vote for both this way. PL

I certainly agree this would be great, and hope it is acted upon.

An easy solution would be to set up a tempo change expression which contains only a single hyphen. When you enter it multiple times so that it gives a dotted line, you would have the best control over all positioning aspects. The horizontal positioning would follow the measure's width. And you can be sure that it appears in the score only once and nevertheless in every part.

Thanks, Harald. It's an interesting thought. Bot how would you enter it multiple times in a practical way? Wouldn't you need to beat-attach each hyphen to, say, 16th notes, one at a time? Or is there a quicker way to enter such an expression multiple times? (I'd call myself an intermediate-level Finale user, not a power user, hence the question.)
