Both the "space systems evenly" at page layout tool, and the "space systems..." plugin aren't that great. The biggest problem is that when spacing systems, it doesn't take in considerations anything, slurs, hairpins, expressions, articulations etc. other than the systems position. So it can easily be so that stuff collides when using these tools, or that it doesn't look that well spaced, because of not considering other stuff other than the systems themselves. Would be better if when spacing it took into consideration all the other stuff, so that it spaced well. And would also be good we a preset when it comes to space at the top and at the bottom. That way you could easily space your systems very well. Rather than of now, when it becomes better by just dragging the systems manually.

What you are suggesting is similar to "magnetic spacing." I sense that if Finale's core structure allowed for this, a Finale option would have been provided not too long after Sibelius introduced the concept.

If the behind-the-scenes database of musical data does not contain the necessary information, then what you desire may have to wait for a radical overhaul of Finale at its core.

What I'm asking for is for Finale to take into consideration other things when spacing systems, so that the result would look better. Then it might actually be useful. Now it kind of just spaces the systems "blindly" rather than taking into account other stuff you have in the score.

Tobias, I would also like to see the implementation of something like this. It would be nice if it were a plugin that would allow you to select a region or to apply it to the whole score. Possibly a way to enter minimum spacing values as well as maximum spacing values. Or maybe it would be simpler if it were integrated into the Respace Staves dialogue box with a simple selection of "avoid collisions." I have no idea what kind of code would need to go into that, but it's just a thought. Fixing collisions takes up so much of the editing process and is such a drag on productivity. This thread deserves some more votes.

I use "space systems evenly" all the time. It does what it's supposed to: space systems. But to take full advantage of the feature, you need to adjust staff spacing and system margins before hand. Currently, my only gripe is that you can't lock a fixed amount of systems on a page like you can in Sibelius.

I agree, though, that Finale could use a lot of work in automation, especially to catch up to Dorico, but this would require quite a bit of rebuilding, namely, the lyrics tool and chord tool.

Adrian: "...may have to wait for a radical overhaul of Finale at its core."

That doesn't seem very likely to happen, alas.

Still, it's amazing that an old program like Finale (launched in 1988?) is still working as well as it does...

I agree with both your points.
