Hey, folks,

I was just querying Lindsey D., one of your tech support folks at SmartMusic about a matter, and she suggested I post my suggestion here.  I'm a songwriter with 300+ tunes in .musx format.  At 73+, I'm only now just learning about many, many things in the cyber world.  One of them is Google Drive.  So, here's the deal: I uploaded my whole current folder of my music into a folder in GD, and, duh, I didn't think first that it is really only a huge storage apparatus.  My suggestion, thanks to Lindsey's urging, is that you put on your list of upcoming projects to include finding a way to all a user to embed some form of Finale into a folder in GD so that when an "Open with" prompt comes up, the user could hit Finale.  I already back up my music on 2 externals as well as my own hard drive, but I only do so every few months.  It would be cool if someday I could make changes to a tune in GD and it would automatically save those changes!

Thanks,

Osea

Please, no more complications until long-standing bugs are fixed.

As you say, Google Drive is nothing more than a backup (and sharing) mechanism. Keep your Finale work on your computer to work on it, and continue with your backup strategies.

Thanks--I was only suggesting the future feature 'cause one of your techies encouraged me to do so.

Mike: "Please, no more complications until long-standing bugs are fixed."
Well, this is the Feature Request Forum and Osea suggests a feature. I don't see a reason why feature requests should not be uttered here. Maybe you consider a new feature to be less important than fixing bugs: okay, that's your opinion, which I respect. But does that help the community in this Feature Request section?

Osea - as I (in my mid-40s) occasionally work with senior Finale users, I'm always interested in habits and best practices of users at an advanced age. People at different ages tend to work differently with computers, and in my opinion, at the moment much software doesn't adapt enough to the user and his habits. I support your suggestion.

Is my opinion not to do something just as valid? We all know that Finale’s resources are very limited, otherwise my request to fix errors first would not be needed. If a suggestion can be voted “up” it can also be voted “down.” I never said it shouldn’t be requested. Only that, IMO, there are other things that should take priority.

Osea, I don’t work for Finale. My opinions are my own.

And BTW, I’m also 70+. And I teach both Finale and SmartScore at Barbershop Harmony Society’s Harmony College NW.

Thank you, Mike, for the very pleasant, sympathetic response.  I'm not sure what got Harald's dander up, but I'd think one of his superiors would catch his response and take some action--or some re-training.  Maybe he's already no longer there.  Thanks, thanks, again.  Yes, the Finale community is vibrant, caring, interested in others, and helpful

Osea,

I suspect the complimentary response was meant for Harald!

This is a users forum. Although Finale employees do occasionally step in, it is, for the most part, chats between users.

What Mike said. We are all users here. Make music staff, if they do chime in, are indicated by green title info. I also second his opinion that disagreement is part of the appropriate discourse here.

Harald,

If you support Osea's request, the best thing you can do is vote for it. That's what the little up and down arrowheads to the left of each post are for.

Mike Rosen, you appear here as a Community Expert, and I respect you in that role. But you can't really 'undo' that by saying you express yourself as a private person.

Connecting to another thread here, I just leveled the -1 vote for the OP to 0, by my +1 vote. Not a satisfactory system, I agree.

This doesn't necessarily mean that I support the OP's request, but better or worse suggestions is one thing, freedom of speech is another.

Anders,

The Community Expert tag is (I hope) in recognition of the fact that I answer a lot of questions. I'm not a moderator, MM employee, or fanboy. My opinions are my own, and I will continue to express them.

I never said the feature request should be taken down, only that in my opinion other problems should be dealt with, first.

Hi everyone, thanks for the good discussion!

A big part of having the Feature Request forum is so that the everyone in the user community can weigh-in on the idea that is presented. This includes the positive, as well as the negative feedback. Hopefully the negative comments remain constructive though because knowing why a user would not want a feature can be just as valuable as knowing why they would. I agree that voting structure that is seen on the user end here is not very helpful and I am looking for ways to improve that. Internally though we can see all the votes, up and down, but hopefully I can implement a better system so that activity on the thread is much more visible to everyone.

As Mike mentioned, the Community Expert tag is in recognition of the fact the users like him do answer a lot other users' questions and have done so for quite some time. The helpfulness of all of the Community Experts is quite valuable and is very much appreciated. Their opinions are, of course, their own personal view and is as valuable and welcomed as everyone else's!
