Hi!

First of all - thanks to all of You out there that bother answering all these questions. It is really helpful!!

So to my issue for the day:

Win10/Finale26

Ex 1 = Before changing stem lenght. Ex. 2 = The result I often get, but don't want. Ex 3 = The result approximately as I want it.

For the time beeing I am working on a lot of choral music for organ, with lyric - the first verse, attached on top of the G-key staff.

I am using standard two staff set up for piano. Two layers in the G-key and two layers in the F-key. I want to shorten the stem lenght to narrow the space between the lyrics and the notes/staff. Especially regarding beamed notes (beamed eights).

Measuerement units: Centimeter. I shorten the stems from normal: 0,74083, to 0,65 or 0,63. After shortening, a lot of my beamed notes gets a much steeper angle - that I do not want. It looks like this increases, the shorter I tell the stems to be. It is no difference wether I set the stem lenght before entering the notes or after. I assume I also need to change other things too, not only the stem lenght, to avoid this behaviour, but I do not know what.

It also seems that some of the beamed notes actually get longer stems.......

Any help here would be most useful!

The plug-in JW Change (to be installed) allows to change stem length, beam height (vertical position, flat...) in a selected region.

These parameters can be applied to a specific layer.

You could also try the plugin Notes... -> Patterson Plug-ins Lite -> Patterson Beams (available in Finale).

You might also consider using points or EVPUs as your unit of measurement. No more multinumeral decimals.

… Ex 3 = The result approximately as I want it …

To get the result precisely as you want it (and not approximately as you want it), try this (I admit that I am guessing):

Document Options - Beams

Select the option {Allow Primary Beam Within a Space}.

Document Options - Stems

Set the Normal Stem Length to 18pt.

If you are adjusting beam slants manually, you should adjust them based on 'staff space' units. Beams should be adjusted by 1/4 space increments so that the beam ends either sit, straddle, or hang on staff lines, rather than float in-between staff spaces. In the picture below, I've adjusted the the left handle of the beam down 0.5 spaces to shorten the stem. The beam ends sit/hang flush against the top staff line.

Hi - Thanks!

I have just recently started "deep-diving" into Finale, and now I realize I should have done this years ago. A whole new world is opening up.

Michel: I can see that the JW-plugins are made for Finale 25. I have posted a question there to find out if they also are working in Finale 26.

Patterson Plug-ins: Nice - am going to study the details more closely here, but are definetely going to use this one again!

Mike: I am definitely going for points or EVPUS from now on. Have used cm because I have some templates I use, that shall fit into word and indesign-documents. Just to make sure I can control the size in the transitioon between the programs. It has though never struck me that after setting up the exact layout in Finale with cm, I can change it back to EVPUs or points. Silly me......

Peter: Tried out "Allow Primary Beam Within a Space", alone, just to see what it really does (I am not quite sure what "Within a space" really means, as english is not my first language). Anyway - the ugly steep beam angles are gone, and so are  the lengthened stems!!! Am now going for testing it together with 18 points.

Goerge: Never thought of that. This gives a whole new dimention to readability. I will follow Your steps as the last finish. (Have worked a lot with design and layout in other contexts, but never really transferred those priniciples to my work in Finale)

Almost certainly, yes. I haven't seen any complaints from users of Finale 26. Make sure you install the 64bit version.
