Finale 26.1.0.484 running on Mac OS 10.14.6

Recently had an issue with question marks (?) appearing all over a passage of music by a colleague (using a PC) who had sent me the file for some cleaning work.

It turned out that he'd hidden some note heads (leaving stems only) to show duration during a vocal slide maneuver. But my (Mac) Finale set up was not reading it the same way.

The SPECIAL TOOLS/NOTE SHAPE TOOL leads to the SYMBOL SELECTION window, from which you can choose any crazy figure to replace your note head.

He'd selected what appeared to be an empty (void) item.  But on my end, that selection coincided with the ?.

I realized then that there were a LOT of these question marks throughout the SYMBOL SELECTION items.  And it got me worried that I was losing items - a sign of program corruption.

Finale has since ruled out any foul play in this case.  The marks are considered "normal," simply showing no coinciding figure in the selection font.

If they asked me, I'd suggest they not use a figure that DOES INDEED indicate program malfunction in other programs.

Timothy,

Fonts can always be problematic, especially when going from one platform to another. It wasn't Finale that selected that specific font character, it was the person who created the original file. There's nothing for Finale to correct in this case.

For future reference, when importing someone else's file to your computer, it's always wise to get a PDF copy of the score from the other guy's computer. That way, if there's a question, you can look at the PDF to see exactly what he sees on his computer.

Good luck.
