Hello, and thanks in advance for any help!  I was given some music written for church and is in the style, I believe, of old chants, i.e. no bar lines, no stems on the noteheads, etc.  I have been asked to try to produce scores for this but I don't think the version of Finale I have (2011) is able to notate this.  Does anyone know if it can, how to do this, and/or if later versions of Finale have this capability.

SO MANY THANKS for any and all help!

I use a MAC computer, El Capitain operating system, and as I said, Finale 2011.

Blessings,

Leona

It can be done by using the Advanced > Stem-length Tool to shorten stems (unless there is a JW Plug-in I am not familiar with. IU don't pretend the process or spacing is easy, as you can see from the spacing in my proof-of-concept.

If Finale 2011 has trouble with this, you might try the demo of Finale v26 (if El Capitan is 64-bit (I forget). There is also a reduced upgrade price until Dec. 2 if you later decide to switch.

There is an add-on to Finale that does Neumes, but I am guessing you did not intend to be that authentic. :-)

Do a Google search for chant in Finale. You will get lots of answers.

Type chant in the Search window at the top of the page. Many threads from a couple of years ago.

Although there's a plugin you can buy to create authentic plainsong in the current versions of Finale, you don't need it — that isn't what you are trying to do. No stems; no bars will get your job done.

… no bar lines, no stems on the noteheads, etc. …

Finale can do it.

I do not recall whether Finale 2011 included the examples, but my own version of Finale v26 came with some Finale documents that demonstrate various layouts, including old vocal layouts such as chant.

Path:

(Finale 26 folder)/Music Files/Worksheets & Repertoire/Repertoire/Classical/Vocal

It is not “for Finale beginners”, but it can be done.

With the Staff Tool you can hide Barlines, and also make Stemless Notes.

I am not sure what you are referring to as “etc.”
