I don't want to turn off automatic music spacing. But I would like to space things in a few measures

in a (perhaps) unorthodox way in a particular piece that I am working on. I have tried moving notes with

the 'Note Position' tool and tried moving notes using 'Speedy Edit'; while  in 'Document Options" I have set

'Manual Positioning' to 'Incorporate' under the 'Music Spacing' parameters.

Yet the notes continue to get moved back automatically.

I have read the posts about Automatic Music Spacing (eventually) becoming a 'Document Option' which will likely fix my problem.

But in the meantime, anyone have a workaround?

Thanks

Turn off Automatic Music Spacing. You can apply it manually everywhere else you want it.

Thanks Mike. But since AMS is a program parameter as opposed to a document parameter, then when I turn it back on for all of my other work, if I happen to open this particular file again, it will do its thing and ruin the spacing.

Yes AMS is a program wide preference. But that's what you need to use based on your comments. Do you have a backup system in place? If not, now is the perfect time to get one. That way, if you open this file by mistake, you can go back to the correct version without losing anything.

I always leave AMS turned off. I apply spacing when and where I decide, I don't leave that decision to Finale. It's easy to space manually, just highlight what you want spaced, whether the whole file or maybe it's just the measure stack you entered, now just press the 4 key. done!. Everything's spacing with one keystroke.

What exactly are you trying to space? Is it harmonic 2nds and unisons? If so, you have to uncheck those parameters in [Document Options > Music Spacing] to gain full control of note spacing.

Thanks.

I'm engraving someone's arrangement that has an abundance of trills and the notes to trill to are quite specific.

I thought this would be the clearest way to do it:

I accomplished what you see by sheer luck. There are no other grace notes in the chart so I changed the grace note distance in Document Options to a negative number ("-.5") and they shifted over as you see. I kinda like it.

For grace notes, choose *Keep Current* in [Document Options > Music Spacing > Grace Note Spacing] and it should keep your edits. Also, make sure you have the most recent Finale 26 update. The initial 26.2 update had a bug that did not keep grace note spacing, regardless of setting.

I would add some space at the beginnings of those measures, so the accidentals aren't crowding the barlines quite so much.

Thanks - agreed. I just quickly took a snap shot so I could show you what I was up to.

How do I move a system to the previous page?
