I have just completed a full symphonic score.

All instruments volumes have been assigned.

When listening to playback – certain instruments need to be adjusted.

What is the best way to test and then finalize an alternate volume for a specific instrument volume to achieve best balance?

Use the Finale Mixer which stays fixed to set base levels), not the Aria Mixer (which shifts in response to dynamic markings).

Your suggestion to use FINALE'S mixer instead of the Aria mixer is really good news to me, because the Aria mixer was constantly fighting me on playback levels. Thank you for that advice. To prevent Aria from changing the volume levels being sent to the Finale mixer, though [which may well result in the same problem as before], I *assume* that I can disable Human Playback from "chasing" dynamic markings in the score? And the technique may also be effective even when HP is set to "none"?

Aria does not send info to the Finale Mixer. The Finale Mixer sets base levels.

I think turning off HP and disabling score dynamics would make for a pretty monotonous score, but each person should do what he or she wants.
