I have successfully opened a midi file that I created in Finale and opened in Logic. When I play it back, the sound is not balanced the way it was in Finale. All the channel faders in Logic seem to be locked together when I try to move them, but the faders all move independently when the piece plays. I assume that is the Human Interface data moving the faders. Before I hit play, when the score is set to the beginning of the first measure, the relative levels of the faders are not anything like I have set in Finale (using one Vienna Ensemble instance with eight instruments).

Before I realized that they were locked to each other, I was hoping to just reset the initial balance of the faders to match what I had set up in Finale. In Vienna Ensemble with Finale and the faders never move with the music. When I moved it to Logic, I set up each instrument separately because I couldn't figure out how to get Ensemble to work.

I realize I probably have Logic questions to ask elsewhere, but can anyone tell me if the midi data that is moving the volume faders when playing are all sent as amounts relatively up and down,  or are sent as absolute? In other words, if I can get them unlocked from each other can I set a relative balance at the start.

I hope this makes sense! By the way, I am on a Macbook Pro, running OS version 10.4.1, with Finale 10.2.1.464 and Logic 10.4.8.

I think this is a situation best solved in Logic rather than Finale. Although I do not use Logic, were I in SONAR or Cubase I would likely start by  "freezing" the MIDI tracks, turning them into audio stems that you would probably find easier to set base levels for either with the faders or using automation.

That's about the extent of my DAW sophistication, so I hope you find it helpful.

I use Logic but am not an expert. If multiple instrument faders move at the same time, that makes me think that these instruments are possibly grouped together.

Now when you see all of the faders moving independently, that movement is controlled by the volume settings. HP most likely added it's interpretation to your file. The volume data is CC#7. If you look at the CC#7 data in Logic's piano roll, you should see data which is controlling the faders.

You said you brought in a midi file from Finale into Logic. You can also try exporting an XML file in Finale and importing that into Logic, to see which method you prefer.
